Fair Trade Coffee Project - Lutheran World Relief (#)
„By working together and pooling their resources to form a cooperative, farmers can sell their coffee directly to international buyers without relying on middlemen. They receive a fair price that covers their cost of production and guarantees them a living wage for their labors.“

„Most of the labor for putting the coffee into a useable form is done by the small farmers who grow the coffee, but most of the profits go to the "middlemen" who handle it at various stages and the "coyotes" who prey on the small farmers. The coyotes offer farmers much needed cash—today—for beans later. It is only later that the farmers realize that they really did sell their coffee "for beans." Now they will not have enough money to make it to the next harvest, leaving them at the mercy of the coyote once again. The cycle, once in place, is very difficult to break. “

„The world’s small-scale coffee farmers are in crisis. Coffee prices have dropped to historic lows. Farmers are trapped at the end of a lengthy and expensive chain of middlemen and little money is left for the people who actually grew the coffee crop. Some farmers are pulling up their coffee crops, unable to survive as small players in an unstable global commodities market.“

„At present, ‘fair trade’ certification is available only to producers, typically small farmers who form a cooperative and sell direct into markets or through fair trade buyers who pay a specific ‘fair trade’ premium. Coffee has been at the forefront of ‘fair trade’ schemes to date, although they extend several other agricultural commodities (e.g. tea, cocoa). IFC and Olam will collaborate to see if ‘fair trade’ principles could be extended to cover their trading activities and establish what criteria would need to be met.“

„Conventionally traded coffee involves a lengthy, and expensive, cast of middlemen between the coffee farmer and the consumer, each taking their share—or more—of the coffee price. What’s left for the farmers may not even cover their production costs or basic living expenses. Many farmers now are earning less for their crops than their great-grandparents did 100 years ago.“

„By choosing fairly traded coffee over conventionally traded coffee, Lutherans ensure that the farmers, who grew those beans, are "guaranteed a fair price for their crop which will cover the cost of production as well as provide income necessary for their most basic human needs -- food, shelter, education and health care," Meier said. "It maintains the dignity of the farmer by giving them the means by which to earn a living rather than rely on charity and aid which is not a sustainable way to live."“
