„Fair trade coffee is coffee that is traded by bypassing the coffee trader and therefore giving the producer (and buyer) higher profits. Fair Trade does not necessarily mean that the extra money trickles down to the people who harvest the coffee. TransFair USA is an independent 3rd party certification that ensures that: Coffee importers agree to purchase from the small farmers included in the International Fair Trade Coffee Register. Farmers are guaranteed a minimum "fair trade price" of $1.26/pound FOB for their coffee. If world price rises above this floor price, farmers will be paid a small ($0.05/pound) premium above market price. Coffee importers provide a certain amount of credit to farmers against future sales, helping farmers stay out of debt to local coffee "coyotes" or middlemen. Importers and roasters agree to develop direct, long-term trade relationships with producer groups, thereby cutting out middlemen and bringing greater commercial stability to an extremely unstable market.“

„Does fair trade promote over production? One of the reasons coffee prices are so low is due to the amount of green coffee available. If production stays at very high levels, what happens to the price? Basic economics says price in a free market is dictated by supply and demand.“

„None of the statistics I have seen suggest that Tanzania produces any more peaberry than does any other coffee region. I would guess that at some early date in the development of specialty coffee the association of Tanzania and peaberry was established, and the combination remained standard in the specialty repertory ever since. Certainly the tradition of offering Tanzanian peaberry rather than some other coffee grade or type from Tanzania was well in place when I researched my first book on coffee in 1975. And, because specialty roasters reserve at most one slot for a Tanzania coffee, I suppose that over the years the peaberry option discouraged roasters from offering other Tanzanias.“
