Fairtrade | News | Press Release (#)

„Launching the Café Revive Fairtrade blend across 198 outlets in September 2004, David Gregory, Head of Food Technology at Marks & Spencer, said: ”In the same way that we changed to using only free-range eggs in all our products, we are switching to Fairtrade coffee in response to demand from our customers. All coffee sold in our chain of Café Revives will be certified by the Fairtrade Foundation. Its unique quality will remain the same.” One of the aims of the Fairtrade oundation’s three-year push is to emphasise that switching to Fairtrade does not mean any concession on quality.“

The Coffee Review - the world's leading coffee buying guide (#)

„In the September Fair-Trade article we wrote that in North America Fair-Trade-certified coffees are available from only three non-Latin-American origins: Sumatra, the Yirgacheffe/Sidamo region of Ethiopia, and the Harrar region of Ethiopia, and furthermore that these coffees have been available here for only two years. Beth Ann Caspersen, Quality Control Officer for Equal Exchange, a distinguished green coffee dealer and roasting company, points out that, in fact, there are three additional Fair-Trade origins available in North America: East Timor, Papua New Guinea, and Tanzania. Beth Ann goes on to write that: "non-Latin American Fair Trade coffees have been sold on the U.S. market for much longer than two years.“

„The fair-trade strategy instead tries to raise the consciousness of consumers through publicizing both the problem and the fair-trade solution, while appealing to peoples' tendency to want to feel good about what they consume. The long term goal, I assume, would be to capture the public imagination to the point that it would be difficult to sell a coffee, at least a specialty coffee, without the Fair-Trade Certified seal, just as it is difficult today to sell a can of tuna without the Dolphin Safe seal. As for quality, fair-traders argue that, if growers are paid more, they at least will have a bit more freedom to consider issues of quality, a freedom which they don't enjoy under present market arrangements.“

The Coffee Review - the world's leading coffee buying guide (#)

„Fair-traded coffees are certified to have been produced by democratically run cooperatives whose members have been guaranteed a "fair" price for their coffees based on an internationally determined formula. Some of the extra money paid by coffee lovers for Fair-Trade coffees is used to promote the Fair-Trade principle in consuming countries, but most of the premium reaches the farmers directly. Almost all Fair-Trade coffees are also certified organically grown and many are shade-grown.“

„Many people have discussed this as an insurance policy for farmers, and since the actual premiums for cup quality will remain, as they do now, we wouldn’t be doing harm to the great cup we love while insuring a decent existence for those who make it all possible. We also are Fair Trade certified by Transfair, we buy Auction Lot coffees and market-independent coffees (the vast majority of our offerings fall into this category), and we donate on a per Lb. basis back to organizations like Coffee Kids, Doctors Without Borders, and the International Red Cross.“

„Despite all of the above, I must say that my personal favorite origin coffee does not have a unique, specific flavor tone—nor is it a certified organic or fair trade coffee, and I have never been anywhere near the region where it is grown. When it comes to a day-in and day-out favorite, I love a good cup of Kenyan coffee. A number of flavor tones can be at work in this coffee—citrus, berry, or wine—but these tones generally do not predominate.“

„Patterson believes consumer support for 100% Fair Trade certified products in the U.S. could ultimately change life for small coffee farmers around the world. But even with their small but growing support today, Fair Trade policies have brought about advancements in healthcare, housing, and education, he notes. In the meantime, Peace Coffee is working on its mission at its own, organic pace.“

„The great origins are Jinotega, Matagalpa and Segovia, both possessing the proper altitude for the highest grade (SHG: Strictly High Grown) growths. This Organic/Fair-Trade certified coffee (name of the best coffees produced at the Prodecoop mill in Esteli) is the epitome of balance and, as the cup cools, increasing power. But let it grow on you, and as the cup cools you get a greater sense of the dimension and great character. The aromas are spicey and sweet, but the cup character is not so mild .“

„Certainly the Fair-Trade people have made some progress in this respect. Fewer than two years ago there were no Fair-Trade certified coffees whatsoever available from outside Spanish-speaking Latin America in the American market. Today there are three non-Latin-American Fair-Trade origins available in the U.S. - not an atlas-full of coffees, certainly, but a good start.“

Our view includes social justice and environmental sustainability: all coffee should be certified organic and shade grown where applicable.“

CoffeeGeek - Coffee: General Discussion, Fair Trade Coffee (#)

„I've recently learned a little bit about Fair Trade certified coffee. As I understand it, it's a system that pays more money for the beans so that the third-world grower can make an actual living from his coffee crop. This comes from charging more for the coffee than you would pay for similar non-certified coffee.“
