[smitten kitchen] Frosting tip: If your kitchen is as hot and sticky as mine is in the summer, you’ll want to watch a frosting like this carefully to make sure it doesn’t get too melty and soft. [Vironomics] Not only has Berlusconi been on his best behavior, but Obamas star-power has been shining bright, chasing away the shadows surrounding the meeting and the sadness weighing on the hearts of the earthquake survivors, many of whom are living in a tent city nearby the quakes center. Obamas easy-going manners, his genuine caring about every person he meets, and his forward-looking thinking have charmed not only Italians, but also the various heads of state convened in L’Aquila, and the entire world”with the possible exception of some Americans who are wondering when theyre going to see the promised recovery, and whether Obama will walk the streets of spontaneous tent cities being built across the U.S. by foreclosed-upon homeowners.

Tips To Brew The Perfect Cup Of Espresso
[tutor-internet.com] That should go without saying, but far too many people neglect the necessary maintenance needed to keep their espresso machines scrupulously clean. A film of coffee oils on your filter basket or group head can mar the flavor of your coffee, and mineral buildup in the various parts of the machine that hold and carry water can give your espresso a tinny or metallic flavor.

Espresso Glasses
[Petunia Bloom] Yesterday I was still bummed about breaking my espresso shot glasses. Ryan wanted me to run to Starbucks and get him a little afternoon treat. I went to the location on Memorial and 71st. When I went through the drive-through I ordered and then asked if they sold espresso shot glasses. The employee said they would check. When I pulled up to the window, a man peeked his head out holding an espresso shot glass that they use in the store and claimed they didn’t sell any retail but they would sell me some the use in their store. I asked how much, and he said $1 per glass. OMG–First of all, that was the type of glass I wanted in the first place; Second of all, if you are to buy espresso shot glasses anywhere else for retail you are likely to pay around $10. I was so excited!! That is what I should have done in the first place- try to buy them from Starbucks. FYI if you make espresso at home!

Introduction to lipids in coffee

Lipids is a term used to cover a range of hydro-carbon organic compounds with certain characteristics - they are soluble in non-polar solvents, and hence not soluble in water.

Your first ever cup of coffee
[http://jimseven.com] This isn’t to say that we don’t appreciate a better cup. Those exposed to good coffee are often mildly shocked at how good it tastes, how sweet or how complex and incredible. The educated consumer remains in the minority which in many ways is a frustration. We have a population happily knocking back cup after cup of filthy coffee and what really boggles the mind is that they know it doesn’t taste good. They almost seem to expect it, a cup of coffee both a jump start in the morning and a mini-ordeal.

SCAE European Team Challenge - Dublin 2006 report
[http://jimseven.com] it was time for the Team Entertainment presentation. You had to fill 5 minutes and be entertaining and it was worth as many points as any other event. We went last (which was great cos everyone was really, really drunk by then) and performed the “World’s Crappest Irish Joke”. The credit for this one goes to Simon (for the joke and the onstage narration) and to Lou for her awesome set and prop design (oh yes people - no expense spared). Somehow we got second place, with the Russian’s comical performance of Swan Lake taking first. My favourite was the Estonians surreal interpretation of “My hat it has three corners”. Very, very funny! Like many of the nights it ended pretty late, but was incredibly good fun and hanging out with all the baristas was great.

[blog.Cafenation.com.au] I enjoy roasting and blending, sharing and discussing, testing and tasting, dialing and pulling, marketing and selling, promoting and of course drinking coffee Could it be that instead of ”moving away from espresso, it is just that other aspects of coffee have captured more of your attention for a while?...

Norway - Coffee in Oslo
[http://jimseven.com] with a training session he was doing (In truth I just stood around and listened like everyone else). We’d also hung out one night in Bern and I think our paths have crossed a few other times. He also knew Anette quite well so everything was very friendly and informal. We went on to a Stockfleths in a shopping mall, one of their busiest but mostly for retail. Because it had no sit down it also had no porcelain and I forget how weird espresso tastes out of a paper cup. Still - it is important to taste everything, especially what the customer tastes.

[A Thought Over Coffee] The Guild is a group of professional barista from around the world that have a passion for coffee, it's preparation, and it's quality. While being a member mostly gives you access to discounted entrance to barista jams around the country and also through the SCAA, the reason I feel it is a great idea to join is for the community.

Getting stuck into some reading
[http://jimseven.com] It is very easy to collect books on coffee for their own sake, and I am as guilty as the next man. I’ve got lots of them (well - not hundreds or anything) that aren’t much good for reference as I have all the source texts. Interesting to see how badly written many of them are, some barely above casual plagiarism. I think I’ve probably posted before on the number of coffee books that anyone with a copy of Davids and Ukers could knock up in half a day. Books published as a reaction to a percieved spike in the public’s interest in coffee. Not useful books - but when you see them on ebay for 99p you can’t help but bid!

The 4Ms of Espresso
[http://www.brewed-coffee.com] The first factor is Macinazione or the proper grinding of the beans. Great baristas in fact will only grind beans for an espresso right before using them. 30 seconds after they have been ground, the beans are already too stale for a good espresso.

An Israeli-style espresso bar?
[Brewed Fresh Daily] Espresso bars like Sicaffe, and the many other high-quality establishments that mushroomed across Israel in the late 1990s are the main reason why Starbucks failed so resoundingly when the chain entered the local market in 2003. The homegrown Israeli chains had gotten a generation of Israeli yuppies expecting high-quality Italian coffee and fresh baked goods - and Starbuck’s offerings simply didn’t measure up.
