In addition, the artist also pays tribute to three additional sources of inspiration: first to Trieste, the capital city of Italy's Friuli region which is home to illycaffè, and to James Joyce who frequently spent time there; second, to Naples, the homeland of coffee, through the beloved character of Pulcinella; and, third, to the end of the millennium, by including the numerals "1999". On the remaining four cups the references to totemic art are clear, bringing to mind the contemporary Italian art movement, the Transavanguardia, of which Paladino was a part.“
