„International relief and development agencies have cited this collapse of coffee prices as the cause of widespread hunger, unemployment and the loss of farms in coffee growing regions worldwide. Equal Exchange, the pioneer and U.S. market leader in fair trade coffee since 1991, is a full service provider of specialty, organic, fair trade coffee, premium tea and instant hot cocoa to 2,000 supermarkets, natural food stores, restaurants, colleges and 1,500 places of worship across North America. One hundred percent of Equal Exchange's products are fairly traded, and the firm offers the world's widest selection of fairly traded coffee, along with four varieties of organic, fair trade tea, and the first cocoa mix to carry the Fair Trade Certified Label. More information about Equal Exchange is available at www.equalexchange.com/PR“http://www.transfairusa.org/content/about/ pr_030129.php - Cached
Global Exchange : Pursuing Justice One Cup at a Time

„If me buying coffee is helping to impoverish farmers in Central America, then I am not living according to my faith." With concerns growing about globalized trade, faith groups across the country increasingly are connecting their java habit to their faith life by getting involved with the decades-old fair-trade movement. Last year, 5,187 congregations nationwide bought 212 tons of coffee, tea and cocoa from Equal Exchange, a Massachusetts-based organization that distributes fair-trade products, compared with the 2,895 congregations that purchased 124 tons in 2002. The fair-trade movement, which began in the 1940s, is a global coalition of laborers, purchasers, relief agencies and human rights groups that aims to raise the standard of living for agricultural workers and artisans in developing countries by ensuring that they get fair prices for their product, be it coffee, tea, cocoa, bananas, carved wooden trinkets or woven baskets. That price is always higher than the world market's prevailing price.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 1686.html - Cached

„It challenges the conventional model of international trade, offering a progressive alternative for a sustainable future. In the global free market, producers are too often exploited by those companies controlling world markets. Receiving a fairer price means they can have some of the many things consumers in the developed world take for granted, such as education for their children, an unpolluted environment, decent working conditions, a stable income and affordable health care, raising the standard of living for all the community. What's different about working with Equal Exchange is that we send our coffee directly to them without intermediaries. The extra money our cooperatives receive makes a difference in medicines and nurseries to care for our children. - Mateo Rendon of FESACORA1UCIRI (the Union of Indigenous Communities of the Isthmus Region), located in the southern Mexican state of Oaxaca, was the first group of farmers in Mexico to export coffee through the fair trade model.“http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/a592706 - Cached

„Consider Equal Exchange for example—a coffee importer in Canton, Massachusetts. Equal Exchange is the fair trade coffee importer of the United States, importing 100% of its coffee according to European standards. These standards establish the following trade criteria: producers must be organized into democratically-run farmers' cooperatives; importers must pay a guaranteed minimum price that covers production costs and ensures a profit (including a premium that is to be used in consultation with the producers for their social and economic benefit); importers must arrange for advanced payment; importers must commit to a long-term trading agreement with the co-op.“http://www.cooperativecoffees.com/about/news/ spr99organicnews.html - Cached
The Coffee Review - the world's leading coffee buying guide
(#)
„These more idealistic partnerships typically involve a roaster entering into an agreement with representatives of groups of small-holding peasant growers that funnels some of the selling price of the coffee toward various projects that directly support the growers: better schools, medical facilities, and so on. This definition of relationship coffee was first promoted by coffee leaders like Paul Katzeff at Thanksgiving Coffee, David Griswold (now president of the green coffee importer Sustainable Harvest), the leaders of Equal Exchange (which has two relationship coffees reviewed this month), and many others. Recently the relationship concept has been pursued on behalf of small groups of Colombian growers with particular vigor by Alejandro Renjifo of Fairfield Trading, who facilitated two of the Colombian relationship coffees reviewed this month.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=98 - Cached

Tea & Coffee 02/00 - Coffee Quality (cont.)

„Other companies like Adam’s Organics, Taylor Maid Organics and Beantrees Café, among numerous other “organic-only” companies, have built their definition of quality around taste together with the environmental responsibility of organic production. Companies like Thanksgiving Coffee and Equal Exchange have created an image of quality based on taste in conjunction with social justice issues. Their success has been based on making quality coffees “with a conscience” more accessible to consumers, and then educating consumers about these issues - a recipe that has also proven successful in the European market for more than a decade.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0200/coffee2.htm - Cached

„After shipping and processing the product arrives here at market where "cosmopolitan consumers routinely pay half a day's Third World wages for a good cup of coffee." Along these same lines Pendergrast talks about a movement in the speciality coffee sector towards the idea of "fair trade" coffee which seeks - in the slogan of one of the companies - to offer "Not Just A Cup, But A Just Cup". Equal Exchange in the US and Max Havelaar Quality Mark coffee in Europe are the best known groups that say we should consider human rights issues when choosing a brand.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0465054676/ref%3dnosim/ lexico - Cached

„The Islamic Republic of Iran has committed itself to substantial trade and market reform in its Third Five-Year Development Plan. It started out with nontariff barriers on all products, a dual exchange rate regime with the market rate more than four times the official rate, and domestic energy subsidies equal to about 90 percent of the cost of energy products. Many of these policies were justified as helping the poor.“http://econ.worldbank.org/view.php?id=3622 - Cached
