Amazon.com: Books: Marlene Dietrich: Life and Legend (#)

„Bach, a film producer and author of Final Cut, who studied with von Sternberg, portrays the latter as a megalomaniac whose amorous frustrations with the star he had created drove him to maintain that she was a puppet who danced to his strings. Bach rejects the standard comparisons with Garbo as he plumbs Dietrich's special blend of erotic power, irony and humor and limns a strong-willed woman whose innumerable sexual affairs satisfied a simple need for companionship. He divulges that Dietrich's sister Elisabeth, whose existence the actress denied, belonged, with Elisabeth's husband, to a group that entertained Nazis at Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Strong on film and stage criticism but less intimately revealing than Donald Spoto's Blue Angel (Forecasts, July 13), this engrossing biography is especially good on Dietrich's early career, her valiant anti-Nazi efforts and her phoenixlike rebirth as a troubadour-actress.“

Amazon.com: Books: Northwest Passage: The Great Columbia River (#)

„I knew next to nothing about the Pacific Northwest, having only spent a few days there as a kid for the Spokane World's Fair. William Dietrich's Northwest Passage: The Great Columbia River filled much of my knowledge gap with a fascinating and well-told story. Dietrich recounts the history of the Columbia, from its original creation through geologic forces and its discovery by Lewis and Clark and other explorers, to development of the river and the region by forestry, fishing, and industrial interests, harnessing of the river through multiple dams (including the huge Grand Coulee dam), decimation of the salmon population and later attempts by environmental and Native American interests to revive the salmons, and turf wars between various interest groups. Dietrich's book is extremely well researched and annotated, but reads not like laborious scholarship but like a labor of love.“

Amazon.com: Books: Krypton Nights: Poems (Paris Review Prize in Poetry) (#)

„Forster, striking upon some fundamental wish in the human psyche to be abducted by the myth. Taking up where the DC comics leave off, Krypton Nights, Dietrich's brilliant suite of persona poems in the voices of Superman, Clark Kent, Lex Luthor, and Lois Lane plumb the depths of our human desire to make myth and to posit the existence of a God-made-man (be it Superman or the Messiah) who could save us. Whether writing a persona poem in the voice of a comicbook character or the lyric record of Branch Dividians in Waco, Texas as he does in another collection, Bryan Dietrich makes meaning out of our fascination with the psychological cariactures that loom large, in cartoon fashion, in our imagination. Against the backdrop of the heroic writ large, Dietrich counterpoints the all too common stuff of our human frailty and failure to successfully negotiate the personal and fashion a reasonable compromise with reality.“

Amazon.com: Books: BLUE ANGEL (#)

„I found this book an enjoyable and informative read, though at times presented romantically and subjectively. The author does a fine job presenting Dietrich from many angles, truly fleshing her out (Spoto is irritatingly fond of the word "plump" to describe Dietrich's early adulthood)... Spoto seems to approach his subject with celestial reverence, as though trying to conceal his own crush behind a web of historical voyeurism (the discussion of debauched 1920s Berlin is particularly gratifying and grounding). Sometimes he speculates too much on possible motivations instead of simply offering the facts, but he also makes good use of others' reminiscences of Dietrich to back up some of his insightful conjectures.“

Amazon.com: Music: Deep (#)

„"Shy" and "Crystal Wrists" are both very good following a similar format to the opener. Up next is the lovely, acoustic ballad "Marlene Dietrich's Favourite Poem" with wonderful, touching lyrics - maybe Peter's best ballad and a majestic tribute to the legendary cabaret singer. "Seven Veils" is solid but not a standout on such a strong album. "The Line Between The Devil's Teeth (And That Which Cannot Be Repeat)" not only has the longest title ever, it also happens to be a reinterpretation of "In the Flat Field", a song he recorded with Bauhaus.“

Amazon.com: Books: The Morgenthau Plan: Soviet Influence on American Postwar Policy (#)

„What makes Dietrich's book of special interest is its emphasis on the development of the Morgenthau Plan(1945-48) -- the precursor to the Marshall Plan (1949-53). Although drafted largely by a relatively unknown economic policy wonk named Harry Dexter White,in fact it is Roosevelt's Treasury Secretary, the venerable Henry Morgenthau,Jr. who is credited with orchestrating the implementation of his eponymous plan.“
