„But at the end of 2003, coffee exporters in Ethiopia were getting just 37 cents per pound, and exporters in Tanzania a mere 27 cents! The farmers who grew the coffee, meanwhile, were only getting a fraction of those amounts. That means that when we pay $1.50 for a cup of conventionally traded coffee from Ethiopia or Tanzania the farmer who grew it gets less than 1¢!“

„Ethiopia's problems are relatively simple to understand. Because the Ethiopian coffee industry, like many others, depends mainly on the work of small-holding farmers with virtually no access to technology and a limited supporting infrastructure (most Ethiopia farmers literally must carry their coffee to the mill on their heads), production costs are relatively high. And, as we know, prices paid farmers for green coffee are now at an all-time low. Which means that, for Ethiopia, income from the sale of coffee simply does not cover the total cost of production.“

„But while we are paying as much as $12 or more for a bag of conventionally traded Colombian coffee in gourmet coffee shops here in the United States, coffee exporters in Colombia are getting as little as 49 cents per pound—and the farmers who grew the coffee are only getting a fraction of that amount. That means that when we pay $1.50 for a cup of conventionally traded Colombian coffee the farmer who grew it gets less than 1¢!“

„After a February trip to coffee farms in Tanzania and Ethiopia, Kimberly Easson, TransFair’s Director of Strategic Relationships, described the sense of hope she felt while meeting with Fair Trade farmers. She was in Africa to attend the East Africa Fine Coffee Association (EAFCA) conference where she participated in a panel on coffee certification.“

„Coffee farmers are free to sell their coffee to cooperatives, acting as agents for the FNC, or to private exporters, through intermediaries. Coffee is exported by Federacafé, which has strong links with all major roasters and conducts promotional campaigns for Colombian coffee generally, and also by private exporters. Private exporters, including Expocafé, owned by the coffee cooperatives, shipped about 60 percent of the total exports in 1996. All shipments are subject to strict quality control by Federacafé.“
