Counter Culture Coffee - Coffee Driven People, People Driven Coffee (#)

„  The contest was held in the city of Santa Cruz de la Sierra, the second largest city in Bolivia.  Santa Cruz was chosen as the venue for the contest for two main reasons: the altitude is more moderate than the super-high La Paz (high altitude is tough on the cuppers, roasting is difficult and water boils at too low a temperature), and the political climate is more stable (the residents of La Paz are fond of barricading main roads as a form of political protest).   I was joined on the jury by a number of great cuppers from around the world.  I was joined by cuppers from Japan, Malaysia, England, Norway, Holland, France, the United States and Bolivia.  It was a great group.  Over four days, we cupped and ranked over 50 coffees to establish the ‘Best of the Best’ from this incredible country.  The coffees were surprising: some tasted remarkably like Costa Rican coffees to me!  Others had a remarkable cherry-chocolate flavor, which I have come to recognize as the quintessential Typica flavor characteristic.  (Typica is a strain of coffea arabica, the coffee plant.  It is the oldest, and one of the greatest).   We finished the contest, and declared the winners.  A Cup of Excellence awards ceremony is always an emotional event, as farmers who have never been recognized for their hard work before are cheered by an audience who are celebrating their achievement.   Many of these farmers had taken a 2-day bus trip just to get to the ceremony.  The commitment that small, quality-oriented coffee farmers have continues to astound me.  After the ceremony was finished, we all danced together, happily celebrating a successful event.   The next day, a few of the judges decided to head down to the coffee growing area, known in Bolivia as the Jungas, to see some of the winning farms firsthand.  Now, going from Santa Cruz to the Jungas requires going through La Paz, an incredible city, up over La Cumbre pass (over 16,000 feet!)“

„Four of the most famous coffees by district are San Marcos de Tarrazu, Tres Rios, Heredia, and Alajuela. Altitude may be a more important factor in determining flavor than district; strictly hard bean indicates a Costa Rican coffee grown above 3,900 feet; good hard bean from 3,300 to 3,900. Unlike many coffees of the world, Costa Rican growths generally are identified either by the estate or farm (finca) on which they were grown, or by cooperative or processing facility (beneficio) where they were processed. This piece of information, which is usually available to the roaster or importer, is seldom passed on to the consumer except in the case of well-known estates like Bella Vista or La Minita.“

„President Miguel Ángel Rodríguez signed the law on 12 January,2002, at a meeting with coffee producers, processors and exporters held at CoopePalmares R.L. Backing for the trust fund will be provided by the Costa Rican Coffee Institute (ICAFE), which will guarantee $5 million; INFOCOOP, another $5 million; the loans received by coffee growers; and the State ($25 million). Juan Bautista Moya, Executive Director of ICAFE, says the sector is confident that the guarantees will not have to be executed, since the trust fund stipulates that when a producer voluntarily makes use of it, a percentage of the benefits will be withheld and applied against his or her debt. Once the trust fund is set up, bonds totaling $75 million will be issued in order to offer long-term rescheduling of loans.“

„Tuesday, 19 June, 2001, 02:25 GMT 03:25 UK Coffee producers move to boost prices Coffee producers from Colombia, Mexico and central America have decided to start destroying more than a million bags of low-grade coffee in a bid to boost quality and raise ailing prices. In a meeting in the Costa Rican capital, San Jose, the coffee-producing countries agreed to begin implementing the plan in October. The Secretary- General of the 28-member Association of Coffee- Producing Countries, Roberio Silva, said he hoped the voluntary programme could eventually be adopted by all members of the group, in order to have an even bigger impact. Coffee prices have fallen considerably in the past two years.“

„But my reasons for liking a particular coffee are often complicated by other concerns. For example, perhaps I have visited the farm where a coffee is grown and admire how it is produced, as I do coffee from the Costa Rican Doka Estate. Or maybe I like the coffee and the economic and environmental sustainability that is part and parcel of every cup. Sumatra Gayoland and Nicaraguan Segovia fair trade and organic coffee are examples of this type of “favorite.” I also love coffees that have specific and unique flavor tones, such as Ethiopian Harrar and Sulawesi Toraja.“

Coffee From Around The World - National Coffee Association (#)

„A Central American coffee-growing country with a reputation for fine coffee, Costa Rica produces only wet processed arabicas. With its medium body and sharp acidity, cuppers often describe a Costa Rican coffee as having 'perfect balance.'  Coffee is grown on predominantly small farms, or fincas. After being harvested, the cherries are immediately taken to state-of-the-art processing facilities, known as beneficios, where wet method processing begins.   In Costa Rica, careful attention to quality processing and conscientious growing methods are consistent with a fine quality coffee.“

„I want to learn more about the supply side of fair trade coffee when I'm in Central America. Do you have any Costa Rican contacts or information on Costa Rican farmers who grow free trade coffee? I'm most interested in the interaction between people and their environment and I think I'd like to do an independent project on some specific aspect of the biological implications of organically grown coffee. I know organic does not necessarily mean fair trade coffee, but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a bit of overlap.“

„The event was an emotional experience particularly for Jose Manuel Urena of Coffee Brokers, New York presently based in Romania. A Costa Rican, from an "old growth" coffee country where people believe they produce the best coffees in the world, he declared that he was humbled by his visit to India. It was a moment of truth for him, on cupping high quality Indian coffees, to experience at first-hand the dharma of the bean, the quality contours of "serious" coffees. He said he'd received a "gift" of a lifetime in the coffee trade.“

„There is a haunting image in Scott Patterson's mind from his last stay in Central America, where he worked as an English teacher. Lines of Costa Rican farmers and land laborers walked along dirt roads toward the cities, leaving their coffee fields behind to look for jobs in sweatshops, known as maquiladoras, because they were unable to support their families. Often, these long journeys were in vain.“

„The good co-operatives are working on this. About 40% of Costa Rican coffee now goes through co-operatives, and the British party was interested to find how hard the co-ops were working to change the individual farmer’s idea of what coffee could do. They are having some success, and their farmers are reasonably well off, and looking forward to the next internet auctions in May. Last year, the best coffee fetched $10.35 per pound, which had an encouraging effect on individual farmers.“

„While still the world’s largest producer of coffee, exports of that commodity are less than 2% of the total. As one Costa Rican farmer pointed out, how much their huge internal consumer market for coffee pays and the effect that has on inflation is of far greater concern to policymakers than whether coffee farmers can make ends meet. Hence, the counter intuitively high estimates for this year’s crop emanating from Brazil itself.“

„The relative lack of innuendo in Costa Rica coffees ironically may be owing to the advanced state of the Costa Rican coffee industry. They tend to come from trees of relatively recently developed cultivars of arabica like caturra or catuai, and usually are impeccably wet-processed using technically advanced techniques that eliminate the oddities of flavor that derive from traditional or regional variations in processing.“
