CoffeeKid - Vacuum Brewer Hey Day (#)
„In North America, and possibly the rest of the world (still checking on this), the vacuum coffee brewer had its Golden Age in the 1930s and 1940s. Even in the 1950s, vacuum brewed coffee was the standard in many kitchens, and even on ships in the US Navy, where many a glass Cory lived and died. The 1960s saw the decline of this device, as fewer and fewer manufacturers made them, and by the 1970s when the auto drip took off, vacuum brewing all but died in North America.“

„Some believe that it was the improvements and convenience of the percolator that caused the decline. Others believe it was America's movement to convenience and cost over quality, where the "60 cups per pound" cuppa joe that became prevalent in the 1950s in order to maintain 10 cent pricepoints at the diner (note that a pound of roasted coffee should yield between 27 and 34 cups for good quality, adequate strength coffee).“

„SCAA: They also made my hit list (the other page), but we're fortunate to have the Specialty Coffee Association of America. They push the boundaries for quality coffee. They are closely involved in the Barista competitions.“

„Any Bunn machine will brew at hot enough temperatures, but with a caveat - Bunns brew quick, and thus need more coffee grounds for the same kind of full cup a 6-9 minute brewer does.“

„Had a very nifty phone call with one of the top guys at Rancilio North America, a relatively new organization that is primed to change Rancilio's North American representation for the better. Most of the convo was confidential, but what I can say is I was left with a very good feeling about where the company was headed, and exciting things are planned for Rancilio in the home and commercial market for the next few years. This news is also good for Canadians, as there is no longer a monopoly in Canada for Rancilio products - Rancilio N.A. is moving in.“
