CoffeeKid - Frothing in a Civil Way (#)
„Frothing milk for your cappas and lattes really is an art, but it's an art that can be learned. With enough patience and finesse, even a stovetop steamer or a "steam toy" (one of those budget espresso machines you see at Walmart for $39 by companies like Salton and Delonghi) can produce great foam and steamed milk. That's right folks, you don't necessarily need a $1200 Pasquini Livia 90 or a $400 Rancilio Silvia.“

„Other companies made traditional brewers as well. Nicro made a stainless steel stovetop model, and several British companies (like Kent) made glass models for their market. In the US, General Electric made many models, some in a very "Jetson's style" shape for both vac pot and stove The stove for one GE model is totally like the Jetsons' flying saucer. Westinghouse and other manufacturers of the day rounded out the offerings.“

„I purchased from eBay a sizable stovetop steamer (and espresso maker, although I have another one I use for espresso). It makes great steam, but I can't for the life of me figure out the three-hole design in the tip of the steam outlet! (click on thumbnail to enlarge pic)“

„For me, I usually turn on Silvia and let her "idle" for at least an hour before use. For those without the patience or time to do so, see Coffeekid's website for "How to cheat Miss Silvia." I still think it is best to allow all of Miss Silvia to reach a stable temperature point through a long warm-up period. Get an appliance timer if you need to get her started before you get up in the morning. If you are going to use a timer, before shutting down Silvia each session, be sure to bleed through the steam wand using the hot water switch until a solid stream of water somes through.“

„Then as far as a steamer goes; it's just a heated container with a tube so you can't go wrong there right? A stovetop steamer should do fine then (though take some skill)?“
