CoffeeKid - Drip Coffee (#)
„Drip coffee. Filter drip, manual drip, auto drip, anything that uses gravity and a filter to make coffee. A lot of coffee snobs eschew filter drip coffee, and I'm probably just as guilty as the rest of fostering the idea that filter drip equals low quality. I've also fostered the idea that filter drip is no where near as exciting or "sexy" as espresso is.“

„That Yirg blew my mind back in May when I first tried it. It was easily the best drip brew coffee I've had in a year.“

„Poor product design is reflected in the tendancy for many auto drip coffee brewers to use the same heat source for water as they do for the hot plate under the carafe. That's right - in many cases, water is flash heated as it passed through the exact same heating coil/device that is used to keep the pot warmer hot. Problem is, to adequately heat up that water to proper brewing temperatures, the hot plate would be too hot for the carafe, so they dial down the heat.“

„But the advent of the automatic filter drip - that was the last nail. The filtered, drip method of producing coffee is a definite step up from instant, and to many, not much of a step down in quality from a vacuum brewer. To get your coffee automatically, and all you had to do after was to dump your filter and grounds in the garbage and rinse (or autodishwash) your coffee pot... well, this was convenience without too much loss of quality.“

„It can be purchased separately as well. You end up with a coffee filtered in the same method as auto drip, which is a detriment to some because paper can impede some of the more volatile oils and aromas from passing through into the final brew. But hey, you're brewing at optimum temps with a vac pot, and most auto drip owners can't say the same. Cleanup is a bit messy for the fingers, but easy - remove filter, rinse over the sink (or shake over the garbage can), untwist the top plastic clamping disc, drop the paper filter, rinse plastic once more, done.“

„Not really - cleaning the milk chamber was a real pain at times. But, as I mentioned above, the drip coffee maker was top notch for its class, one of the best I'd ever tried up to that point, so I "put up" with it.“
