CoffeeKid - A Home Roasting Primer (#)
„One of these three roasters is still around: the Alpenrost, or the "Alp" as most people refer to it. It has its problems - an anemic cooling cycle, the inability to view your roast as it progresses, and unpredictable levels of roasts at times, but by and large, it's a great roaster, albeit pricey at $300 or so average price.“

„To the right you see part of it. That's my Alpenrost Rotary Drum roaster (aka an Alp), the day I unpacked it. It is the home roaster I use the most, mainly because of the large volume it handles but also because I prefer the resulting bean quality. My other two purpose-build roasters - a Hearthware Precision, and a FreshRoast also get use, but mainly in an additive role, as in if I want to add 50 grams of robusta to a blend.“

„Long Wearing out of this current crop of machines, the Alpenrost (supplied by Swissmar ) is easily the longest wearing machine of the bunch. I've put about 180lbs (370 roasting sessions) of coffee through this thing, and while it isn't performing at top ability today, it's holding up well. Two things that went on the unit - the display panel's LED counter has one of the bars not working, so 8 looks like a 9, etc.“

„Let me start by saying I like the Alp and use if for most of my roasts. I still use a Fresh Roast+ for smaller batches or if I need to be extra careful with tracking a particular roast color, etc.“

„Take a look at the following sections that cover homeroasting. I hope to add to this section from time to time as I discover new ways to roast coffee, new tools to do it, or new discoveries.“

„from Down East Coffee company (1-888-224-2233), mentioned above in the Jacmel story, also recently sold me 5lbs of coffee from Cuba. I've roasted up 454grams so far (two batches in the Alpenrost), and the short and sweet is, it has a very unique taste, but is a bit soft, mainly because they simply don't have the altitude in Cuba like they do in Haiti, Jamaica, etc etc. The Extra Turquino is probably the island's second best bean - there is a Crystale bean that is supposed to be WHAM! But it's priced higher than most Hawaiians, and is very hard to come by.“
