CoffeeKid - A Closeup Look at Ground Coffee! (#)
„I'll have the weed whacker grinder pics up later on for comparison, but from my microscope trip last year, I can tell you that the blade grinders don't shave like this - leaving nice smooth walls for the water to pass smoothly by extracting goodness. No. They leave little tiny boulders with lots of indentation and damage.“

„The timer shuts the grinder off automatically. These machines produce a more consistent grind than the cheaper electric blade grinders, they usually do not have to be fussed over while they grind, and they definitely do not need to be cranked by hand. You must be prepared, however, to clean the aperture for the ground coffee after every third or fourth use (some coffee stores sell a brush for this purpose; a small, stiff paintbrush works fine), and periodically open the grinder and clean the burrs. If you grind oily dark roasts, you may find that a brush is not enough for cleaning your grinder; you may have to literally carve the caked coffee from parts of your grinder when you carry out a major cleaning.“

„They tell me that the grind is the other really important part and the whirly blade grinders make too big of a variety in the grind for good results, but if you don't have a burr grinder (like me...yet) I discovered that to help you get more uniform grounds, put a few more beans in than you will need and after you grind your coffee (15 seconds for drip) put it into a yogurt strainer (3 bucks at your local kitchen specialty store) and keep tapping. The little dust falls out, the smallest ground go to the bottom. Scoop from the yogurt strainer.“

„The problem with applying this formula to espresso brewing is the precision required of the grind. The little electric blade grinders so common now in North-American homes, used with care, will produce a grind sufficiently fine and uniform to produce decent, albeit thin-bodied, espresso on simple brewing devices that work by steam pressure only. However, larger pump or piston machines require a much more precise grind to operate to their full potential.“

„Maybe we should bring up the the blade styled coffe grinder at these point. This type of coffee grinder is practically available in every houseware store in the world. The blade style coffe grinder works simply with two high speed spinning metal blades and a universal electric motor. The Blade type coffe grinder chops the beans up.“
