CoffeeGeek - When Pros and Amateurs Collide! (#)
„It turns out that Doug was equally impressed by us alties; we were, in the words of Mike Ferguson, the SCAA marketing director, "for those of us in the specialty coffee industry, almost mythical creatures, true connoisseurs whose relationship with coffee is not necessarily bound to the economic practicalities of running a business." From their point of view, the demand for quality must start with the coffee drinker; without that, companies like Intelligentsia remain rarities, since their quality is a result of the passion of the owner and staff rather than the logic of the market. So Doug, a SCAA board member, wants to create a better market by fostering connections between quality roasters and coffee connoisseurs. The recent move by the SCAA to create a consumer member category is one result; the espresso-in another.“

„LONG BEACH, CA - The Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA) supports the efforts of Oxfam International to raise awareness of the social, environmental, and economic impacts of the current crisis on coffee farmers world-wide. The long-term viability of the specialty coffee industry is dependent upon the sustainability of those who produce high-quality coffee. For this reason, it is in the best interest of specialty coffee roasters and retailers to build long-term relationships that provide fair prices to coffee producers.“

„Until recently there has never been a definitive chart to say, to what color or roast degree, a roast of a certain name must subscribe to. The Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), in an effort to add some uniformity to the industry, has put out a roast color chart. But that doesn't affect the brand new roaster who knows what they used to drink in a little Café in France and starts roasting a medium dark French Roast, nor does it affect the old time family-owned roaster who never even heard of the SCAA. If they have a coffee that has been their Italian Roast for 50 years, then it doesn't matter if the proper name of said roast on the SCAA chart is French or Viennese or Full City or whatever, it's still Italian Roast to them.“

„The BSCA used the occasion of the Cup of Excellence event to hold their second annual meeting. The BSCA was founded in 1991 by 14 specialty coffee growers who, after visiting a SCAA Convention in the USA, envisioned a similar organization in Brazil to promote the production and marketing of specialty coffees. The BSCA today is composed of 50 associates from all the principal producing states and exports have grown from one container in 1991 to over 300 thousand bags in 2002.“
