„ It is a privately held firm, headquartered at the Natural Capital Center in downtown Portland, Oregon. „Other companies are creating relationships in entirely different ways. Portland Roasting, a Portland, Ore., company known for its environmental and social choices, recently entered a unique relationship with a Guatemalan grower, Sandra Isabel Roche and Farm El Paternal. The partnership will result in a new roast water treatment facility on the coffee farm, as well as fair wages to the coffee growers, and increased coffee quality. "We care about things, so we've decided to do it ourselves," says Mark Stell, managing partner for Portland Roasting.“

„ To demonstrate the impact of smart marketing, I've compiled three case studies: The Tao of Tea, Stumptown Coffee Roasters, and Peet's Coffee & Tea, all in Portland, Oregon. Walk into any of these cafés and you will immediately understand who they are and what they are about. The Tao of Tea serves wonderful teas in a serene environment with subdued lighting, ceramic tile floors, tree stump stools with tables, and walls adorned with shelves of tea accessories from producing regions around the world.“

„The growers form into cooperatives and become Fair Trade certified by Transfair. Coffee importers and distributors can also become certified, which means they agree to pay to use the logo, pay the Fair Trade price, and support outreach. The growers are guaranteed to receive $1.26 per pound of coffee ($1.41 for organic), or $.05 over current market price. This system seems to be working -- Transfair has many accounts of growers making enough profit to upgrade their equipment and processes.“

„ It is very Coffeegeek. If you’re communing with the inner circle of Coffeegeeks, sure fly the freak flag high, but the rest of the time please keep your card carrying ristretto membership in your pocket. Stop the insanity. You’re only hurting yourself.“

„They can be found in just about any coffee store. I purchased mine at Allen Brothers in Albany, Oregon (I support the little guy). We stop there to get good espresso on our travels to Portland.“
