CoffeeGeek - So You Say There's a Coffee Crisis ()

„Don't be a zealot - just explain that quality coffee is disappearing and the quality of supermarket coffee is going down so much that the Big Four have to regularly modify, enhance, and process beans with new methods to disguise the horrid taste of the robusta they are putting into their products. If I was a long time Folgers drinker, the thought that Folgers had to steam bath my coffee, or add hazelnut flavours to the coffee, or spray chemicals and do other mechanical things to reduce, eliminate, or hide the rubber burning flavours, I'd want to know and I'd consider changing brands!“

„may be of interest to you! Just search for "cocoa" and there's an article that explains the dangers of cocoa bean mulch to dogs (apparently the same substances exist in both coffee beans and chocolate beans that can harm animals: namely, methylxanthines theobromine and caffeine) .It's interesting that the effects in animals are widely varied... may explain your dog's lack of reaction!“

„ This is one of the most demanding tasks but can also lead to great excitement when an exceptional and unusual offering is discovered.  Very few small coffee roasters purchase beans directly from producers and when they do it is usually the result of personal relationships developed over a period of time.  Often the road from producer to roaster is a long one involving many middlemen and thousands of miles of transport.  Most coffee beans are bought from brokers or merchants who specialise in coffee.“

CoffeeGeek - Coffee: General Discussion, Freshness of Green Beans CoffeeGeek - Coffee: General Discussion, Freshness of Green Beans

„ The accepted life cycle of a green bean is usually about one year, and when a new crop is available, any coffee left over is then referred to as "past crop".  How the green coffee is processed by the grower is also of great effect.  Terms like "natural", "washed", and "semi-washed" are all used to describe different methods of cleaning and drying green coffee before it is bagged and sold.  The drying method will also have great effect on the "life" of the green coffee.“

„Keep in mind these are all intensity ratings for espresso, not quality or preference ratings. I have used two sources for these beans, Sweet Marias , denoted as SM; and Orleans Coffee Exchange , denoted at OCE, but I should note that many of these beans are available from both places as well as other high quality green bean resellers.“
