CoffeeGeek - SCAA Anaheim Pre Show and Day One

CoffeeGeek - SCAA Anaheim Pre Show and Day One ()

„One thing Don did was introduce me to the writer of the excellent book Uncommon Grounds. That book is, of course, written by Mark Pendergrast, and I got a chance to talk to him a bit about the book, how much I liked it and we ended up talking about CoffeeGeek a bit. Mark was very intrigued by the site, one he hasn't seen yet, and even mentioned an offer of writing a review or two for the website, on coffee-related books.“

„I saw a lot of familiar faces at the reception. Mark Pendergast was there (the author of Uncommon Grounds, a novel / historical look at coffee). He told me about a new project he has going on - his new book which will be about the world of epidemic "forensic" doctors - think CSI, but for doctors and scientists who go to extremes to combat infectious diseases.“

„I found them because they just started advertising on CoffeeGeek (no, I'm not mentioning them here because of that - but it is true that I have not heard of this company before they signed up as an advertising partner). I think this is going to be my new source for Fair Trade green coffee - their single pound prices okay (not great), but the five pound prices are pretty good - average of about $7 a pound or less, in Canadian dollars. Compared to US sources of green Fair Trade coffee, it's downright cheap once you factor in shipping costs.“

„It was released by the Chemex Corporation in 1942. This was during a time when 64% of all household coffee was made using a percolator.(Uncommon Grounds , Mark Pendergrast page 272) Mark Pendergrast in the book Uncommon Grounds writes about the popularity of the Chemex saying, It never challenged the percolator, except amoung highbrows and purists.   „After shipping and processing the product arrives here at market where "cosmopolitan consumers routinely pay half a day's Third World wages for a good cup of coffee." Along these same lines Pendergrast talks about a movement in the speciality coffee sector towards the idea of "fair trade" coffee which seeks - in the slogan of one of the companies - to offer "Not Just A Cup, But A Just Cup". Equal Exchange in the US and Max Havelaar Quality Mark coffee in Europe are the best known groups that say we should consider human rights issues when choosing a brand.“

„With coffee prices rising, African Robustas began to flow freely into U.S. blends. According to Mark Pendergrast in Uncommon Grounds, “In 1951 Africa had accounted for only 4.8% of U.S. coffee imports; by 1955 the figure had risen to 11.4%.”“
