CoffeeGeek - Saeco MC2002 Burr - Doug Wiebe's Review (#)
„This chute is covered by a plastic grid whose main function appears to be either to clog up the machine or keep unwary fingers out of the grinder machanism. With my oily espresso beans, the machine was so clogged that after two days of use (1/4 lb of coffee) very little of the ground coffee made its way to the collection hopper. I spent a good long while using toothpicks to scrape the collected ground coffee out of the chute. Using a medium roast bean afterwards provided a clog-free chute.“

„Look at any espresso machine and you'll find a grinder either attached to it or close by. At first glance it may look like any other grinder but it's not - it's special. That's because espresso requires an extraordinary grind. Traditional filter brewing machines just use gravity to push the water through the coffee grounds.“

„2- Make sure that it is properly ground. This may take experimentation for your machine and taste, so get small amounts. This will NOT be proper espresso grind (extremely fine and will likely clog your machine), but it is much finer than drip coffee. Do not use `all purpose grind.` Consider having your coffee ground at a cafe, though doing so with large amounts is counterproductive as it stales very quickly.“

„You will spend much thought and energy tweaking your grinder for the perfect pour. Life with your espresso machine is better if you just invest in two grinders: one very good tool for espresso and a cheap little blade grinder for your other coffee brewing needs. Some espresso enthusiasts swear by their manual, hand-cranked grinders. See the Chrome Peacock Lever Machine Web site, described above, for a source for hand-cranked coffee mills.“

„To extract espresso properly it is essential to use a burr grinder and to grind per order. The two major types of burrs used are flat and conical. Conical burrs are desirable because they increase the surface area of each particle and the amount of flavor that can be extracted from the coffee. Since conical burrs have longer cutting edges, the burrs can rotate at lower speeds which reduces the heat created. Flat burrs should be replaced after 600 pounds of coffee have been ground and conical burrs should be replaced after 2000 pounds of coffee have been ground.“
