CoffeeGeek - La Pavoni Professional - Daniel Parilla's Review ()

„ Don't be intimidated by it.  It is not difficult, and if you buy a can of Lavazza (which is a decent grind, a little on the course side though,) one can easily master the tamping portion of the preparation.  With Lavazza espresso, it takes a good firm press to properly tamp; the resulting lever pull is almost but not quite equal in force and will be very smooth (no straining allowed) and will start rich flow enhanced with crema.  Then you can make the move to grind your own beans and match the fineness to your tamping technique.“

„If the coffee gushes out rather than dribbling, compensate by using a finer grind or by tamping the coffee more firmly. If it still gushes out, use a bit more coffee and, if you are grinding at home, increase the fineness of the grind. If the coffee oozes out rather than dribbling steadily, use a coarser grind or go easier on the tamping. With pump and piston machines the ideal 1-to-1 1/2-ounce serving of espresso should dribble out in about 15 to 25 seconds from the moment the first drop appears.“

CoffeeGeek - Rancilio Silvia - Chris's Review CoffeeGeek - Rancilio Silvia - Chris's Review

„ I was going to delay the purchase but I saw that the Daily Grind had dropped the price to $325 (The price had since just gone up to $345).  It may be odd to say, but I‘m glad that I worked my way up the expresso machine chain (Krups steam toy -$60; Krups pump toy -$100;  each busticated from use before being replaced).  I would have hated to have dropped the money on a Silvia and then find out that it didn‘t really matter to my quality of life -- spending money for the sake of spending money is a very expensive hobby.“

„I'm happy with my Capresso EspressoPro (~$250; I got it on sale for $200).  It makes good espresso using preground Lavazza or Illy with a minimal learning curve.  I'm not much of a milk fan so I haven't tried much along the cap/latte side, but I have verified it makes satisfactory mochas.“

„The timer shuts the grinder off automatically. These machines produce a more consistent grind than the cheaper electric blade grinders, they usually do not have to be fussed over while they grind, and they definitely do not need to be cranked by hand. You must be prepared, however, to clean the aperture for the ground coffee after every third or fourth use (some coffee stores sell a brush for this purpose; a small, stiff paintbrush works fine), and periodically open the grinder and clean the burrs. If you grind oily dark roasts, you may find that a brush is not enough for cleaning your grinder; you may have to literally carve the caked coffee from parts of your grinder when you carry out a major cleaning.“
