CoffeeGeek - Articles: CoffeeGeek Columnist Feedback, Buying Gear in Canada by Mark Prince (#)
„I am certainly an inconsequential customer for them with my small order of cups but all the same I am soured on the company. Josuma uses UPS as their shipping company and I had to wait over 30 days for a bag of Malabar Gold to make its way from California to Calgary. It was in Canada (Vancouver) for a brief while but ended up back in Seattle and then Chicago. UPS wasn't open to refunding any part of the shipping cost but they were not shy about charging a $45 brokerage fee for an item (green beans) that has no tax or duty on it.“

„Brent Fleming who owns Qusac Decaf, Inc. based in Montreal, Canada cites his company’s efforts to pick up some of the demand for a ‘natural’ decaf, “We are working on what would be considered a natural method,” although Fleming did not elaborate as to what, exactly, that would entail, perhaps not wanting to tip his hand. Demand must be increasing, however as he also noted that he was, “Just finishing an expansion of our facility. We’ve seen a growth for our company, although the general market is pretty level.” This does confirm what other decaffeinators suspect - that growth for one processor often does not mean that the whole pie is increasing but rather that the size of the slice for each may be shifting.“

„"The majority of people are drinking it for the caffeine infusion, they're not drinking it for the flavour. A lot of people that drink coffee insist they don't like the flavour of coffee at all." A poll taken by a Chicago-based coffee company supports Mr. Newell's belief. More than half of the coffee drinkers questioned - 58 per cent - said they don't like the taste of coffee but they drink it for the buzz.“

„An interesting survey of caffeine contents in cups of coffee was conducted in Canada (Stavric et al, reference below). Whether the coffee was prepared by housewives at home, for sale in commercial outlets, or by individuals at work, the mean caffeine content was about 80 mg per cup (about 350 mcg per ml). The means for roast and ground coffee, both drip and percolator brewed, were below 85 mg; for instant coffee 71 mg. However, the range of measurements was so wide that, for most individuals, it would be inaccurate to use these figures as a basis for calculating the exact amount of caffeine consumed in a day.“
