From Ethiopia To A Stripmall Starbucks Drive-Thru | hugeasscity
[hugeasscity] Yes indeed, here in the United States, we do things a little differently. While the relaxed chat over coffee is still a strong tradition, coffee is more commonly consumed as quickly as possible for purely utilitarian reasons—it keeps us going in the face of lives that lack proper mental and/or physical stimulation. Our great contribution to coffee’s culinary arts: Folger’s instant.

Starbucks in stealth mode: Just add beer
[DailyFinance] The downfall of Starbucks began with the comany biting off more than it could chew, then trying to compete with places whose coffee is not even in the same ballpark (aka Dunkin Donuts and McDonald's) just to make more money via food. Now it is stuck with those disgusting breakfast sandwiches and the coffee itself is just an afterthought, and Starbucks did it to itself.

There doesn't appear to be any basis for that view.

Time magazine writer: Pike Place Roast is "coffee for people who ...
[Starbucks Gossip] And, there is a way you can tell whether the coffee is getting low, and that's just by looking at the clear glass window on the urn..When the liquid in the window gets low, you move and rebrew another as a backup, or you stage it to where you can start brewing as soon as it runs out(If you are low on urns for whatever reason)..As a partner, I have started to ignore the critics, because most of them are just frustrated that Starbucks won't ever be dead, and that as soon as the recession is over, Starbucks will be positioned for success, becuase we are getting all the kinks out now. No matter what we do as a company, people will whine, because we're a big corporation, and as we all know, big corporations are bad, according the commies in the media, and the "commies" that tend to be the main people critical of the company..When the new changes start to result in more sales, and a higher stock price, you won't see Wall Street saying anything about how the coffee tastes..

The first time, we ordered a new glass piece for about $20. Then, about a month later it broke again. That was it, I can’t be replacing the glass for $20 every month. So, I went on a search for a better press.

LAMILL COFFEE CO.
[la.foodblogging] Our very patient, sweet waitress summoned a guy in charge of coffee creation and he kindly explained that their drinks are made from precise recipes with exact ratios of milk to coffee etc. (BTW there was no attitude while explaining why they are so particular about the drinks ”¦ each person was gracious and sincere.) Much to my surprise, he finally agreed to bring the chocolate sauce and whipped cream on the side.

Starbucks announces free WiFi
[Computerworld Blogs - Mobile & Wireless] Unless you have no other option, I don't understand why anyone would use starbucks over a local coffee shop. They almost always have free wifi at small shops, don't charge $3.50 for a cup of coffee with stupid names and don't require any kind of card...which may be free, but will definately be using your name and address for marketing purposes....

Think Decaf Coffee is Better? Think Again!
[Coffee Addiction] A recent study sponsored by the U.S. National Institutes of Health suggests that drinking decaffeinated coffee could lead to a rise in harmful cholesterol levels, which increases your risk of heart disease. The results of the study showed that the group drinking decaf coffee experienced an 18 percent rise in the fatty acids in their blood, which drives the production of LDL (bad) cholesterol. Some of the digestive and gastrointestinal problems associated with regular coffee do not disappear when one switches to decaffeinated coffee.

Don't Drink The Water Up There
[Gridskipper, the Urban Travel Guide] The two main reservoirs serving Vancouver, the Capilano and the Seymour watersheds, are brown and muddy as is the tap water derived from said reservoirs. Now when I see a Fair Trade certified symbol (pictured here), I see two images from Black Gold in my mind: one of a long table of Ethiopian women sorting through thousands of coffee beans by hand for 50 cents a day, and another of a child being weighed at a therapeutic feeding station to determine if he is undernourished enough to receive food.

Your first ever cup of coffee
[http://jimseven.com] This isn’t to say that we don’t appreciate a better cup. Those exposed to good coffee are often mildly shocked at how good it tastes, how sweet or how complex and incredible. The educated consumer remains in the minority which in many ways is a frustration. We have a population happily knocking back cup after cup of filthy coffee and what really boggles the mind is that they know it doesn’t taste good. They almost seem to expect it, a cup of coffee both a jump start in the morning and a mini-ordeal.

Learning from a master roaster
[Ministry Grounds] Inhaled caffeine I’m still not sure I believe this, but Dean told of a situation that lends credence to the theory that coffee roasters inhale (and absorb) quite a lot of caffeine in the roasting process. He tells of an electrician who spent the day working on Dean’s equipment. He drank no coffee and no soft drink, yet when breath tested on the way home, blew a high level of caffeine!Given that Dean’s equipment is properly vented to the outside, it makes me wonder what I’m inhaling as I roast in my garage!

Getting stuck into some reading
[http://jimseven.com] It is very easy to collect books on coffee for their own sake, and I am as guilty as the next man. I’ve got lots of them (well - not hundreds or anything) that aren’t much good for reference as I have all the source texts. Interesting to see how badly written many of them are, some barely above casual plagiarism. I think I’ve probably posted before on the number of coffee books that anyone with a copy of Davids and Ukers could knock up in half a day. Books published as a reaction to a percieved spike in the public’s interest in coffee. Not useful books - but when you see them on ebay for 99p you can’t help but bid!

Why isnt coffee roasted where its grown?, part 2
[green LA girl] The great thing about having awesome readers: Sometimes the comment streams way more informative than the post itself, as in the case of the original “Why isnt coffee roasted where its grown” post. A roundup of the reasons why: Freshness: (mentioned in original post) Coffee starts to go stale beginning right after it gets roasted, though green coffee (as in unroasted coffee) can sit around for months and be ok.

Conversation soon turned into complaints about stress in work and life. Offering his guests coffee, the lecturer went to the kitchen and returned with a large pot of coffee and an assortment of cups: porcelain, plastic, glass, some plain-looking and some expensive and exquisite, telling them to help themselves to hot coffee. When all the students had a cup of coffee in hand, the lecturer said: “If you noticed, all the nice-looking, expensive cups were taken up, leaving behind the plain and cheap ones. While it is but normal for you to want only the best for yourselves, that is the source of your problems and stress. Dylan's Candy Bar and Candy Bars
[Candy Blog] There were candies there that I haven’t been able to find in other stores, so I appreciate that there were unique items there and there was a wide price range as well so you could get out of there with a bag of candy for under $5 with careful decision making. Part of the attraction of candy for me has always been its affordability and Dylan’s takes that part of the fun away.

TWOTS to be completed
[RFAtoday] The War of the Societies. That name has been mentioned for a year now, still the sad part is that the project hasn’t been finished. Well, that’s finally about to change. Almost two weeks ago now, the TWOTS workshop was re-opened without much fanfare, the final fighting sequence was released to the rotoscoping team to get it ready for the premiere of the final product on Wednesday, May 3rd, 2006. The scenes that are now being rotoscoped incredibly enough are from the original roll recorded a year ago or so, so we haven’t actually recorded any new material for this release at the moment (nor are we planning to do so). After the May 3rd release I’ll officially be stating that the TWOTS project will be put in the past of the IEEE UPRM Student Branch history and we’ll move foward with great new projects in the near future. It’s been a journey for the past year, but I think TWOTS has proven that it can hold the test of time (as well as ourselves).

Why cant I see it coming?
[RFAtoday] Once more I find myself within a deep mix of work and studies. This time I’m referring to the IEEE DarkFire project. The IEEE DarkFire project is the website that will be submitted tomorrow morning to the IEEE for competition both at the latin american level as in the worldwide level. In January I started off with a good group of people that had stated would “be there” during the job. Overtime, once more in my life, I saw as each one slided out of the project - most of them because of lack of interest or just possibly for the fact that they had “better things to do”. I ended up with the same classic people who are always there and whom I’m really greateful of having besides me - still, to mount a full website in two days isn’t easy.
