„In 1714, Jean de la Roque writing of the excitement caused by the exhibition of a coffee tree at the Jardin des Plantes in Paris spoke of the Dutch gardener who tended it: "He told us that there was a great tree of this species in the Hortus Botanicus of Amsterdam whose height was equal to the second story of a house and proportionally as large. That great tree came originally from Arabia, brought from there very young and transported to Java. After some stay, it came at last to Holland where it grew to perfection.“http://www.germinalproductions.co.uk/cafe/ botanics.html - Cached

„The agri-forests where coffee has traditionally been grown serve as replacements for the original Neo-tropical rainforests. By growing coffee under a canopy of diverse trees, the soil and water benefit, the birds and other creatures dependent on the shade habitat benefit, and, ultimately, people benefit from not having their resources destroyed and poisoned through over use of chemicals. (Much of the land we saw slipping away in the aftermath of Hurricane Mitch was land denuded of trees.) By educating the coffee consumers about the long-term benefits of sustainably grown coffee, they come to realize the importance of coffee in protecting the environment. This empowers them and awakens in them an understanding that environmental issues are essentially issues of consumption.“http://www.virtualcoffee.com/may99/ may_songbird.html - Cached

„In the Sustainable Coffee Survey report, nearly 45 percent of the companies claiming to carry shade-grown coffee did not even know who their shade-certifying agency was. Many importers, roasters and retailers add to the confusion by selling "verified shade" coffee, which comes from plantations that have not been certified by Eco-OK or SMBC but have been visited by someoneoften an importerwho, without scientific guidelines, checks to make sure shade trees are present on the farms. Most people seem to agree that certified-shade is the clearest way to convey the concept in the marketplace and provide a transparent method of ensuring validity of shade claims.“http://www.virtualcoffee.com/sept_2002/ shade_grown.html - Cached

„Regarding that supply, both the planting and harvesting schedules chosen by coffee farmers will affect the availability of green beans in the marketplace. A tree planted by a farmer today will not yield a crop for another three to five years, so coffee growers have to be both agronomist and seer. It stands to reason that coffee growers want to plant only to the extent that their harvest will be a profitable one, so tracking the trends in coffee consumption as well as the global coffee yields become key considerations when deciding how much to plant.“http://www.sallys-place.com/beverages/coffee/ whats_goes_up.htm - Cached

In 1992 the “Regreening of the Barren Hills Program” commenced, to reforest denuded areas (blamed on Montagnard rotational farming), followed by a 1998 “Five Million Hectare Reforestation Program.” Much of this “reforestation” involved planting coffee trees, almost all of them Robusta. It is unclear exactly how the phenomenal growth in Vietnamese coffee cultivation was funded, since no one now wishes to take responsibility for it. It appears to have been a combination of money from the Vietnamese agricultural bank, the World Bank, French, German, and Swiss governmental agencies, and programs sponsored by Nestle, Kraft, Sara Lee, and several coffee trading firms.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0603/special.htm - Cached

„Since we have come to associate the word coffee so absolutely with a hot, aromatic brown liquid, some may find it hard to believe that human beings waited for several hundred years before concluding that the most effective way to get what they wanted from the coffee tree was to roast the dried kernel of the fruit, grind it, and combine the resulting powder with hot water to make a beverage. The alternative solutions are many, and some apparently still survive as part of the cuisines of Africa and Asia.
