„It contains caffeine, which is a mild stimulant, and in many people coffee drinking enhances alertness, concentration and mental and physical performance. Although it contains a wide variety of substances, it is generally accepted that caffeine is responsible for many of coffee’s physiological effects. Because caffeine influences the central nervous system in a number of ways and because a small number of people may be particularly sensitive to these effects, some people have attributed all sorts of health problems to coffee. Caffeine is not recognised as a drug of abuse and there is no evidence for caffeine dependence.“

Coffee and Alertness Coffee and Alertness

Coffee is well known for containing caffeine, which is a mild central nervous system stimulant. Drinking coffee can therefore have positive effects on an individual's alertness and concentration so aiding better performance and this has been shown to be of benefit when an individual is feeling tired or lethargic.  Strong evidence for the beneficial effects of regular caffeine consumption was shown using data from a cross-sectional survey of a sample of over 9000 British adults.  Results showed regular coffee consumption improved cognitive performance (1).“

„However, its effects on alertness are valuable in many everyday situations. For example, there is growing evidence that caffeine intake from coffee can increase alertness in car drivers and hence reduce accidents. Sleep-related car accidents show peaks in the early morning and the early afternoon. An intake of 150 mg caffeine in coffee has been shown to significantly reduce driving impairments, subjective sleepiness and electroencephalographic (EEG) activity indicating drowsiness in early afternoon driving tests (1).“

„Physiological effects of caffeine on the human body aresomewhat understood and well documented. The main physiological effect of caffeine appearsto be as a stimulant of the central nervous system and most of the effects observed arebehavioral in nature. Caffeine is associated with an increase in intellectual activity, but this seems to be significant only when the individual is fatigued or bored. Similarly, caffeine has been linked with sleeping problems and although there is evidence to supportthis, the variation from individual to individual is considerable.“
