Coffee: Old Familiar Becomes New Favorite (#)
„In the case of caffeinated sodas, trimethylxanthine is added during processing. The caffeine level in coffee and tea is as varied as the response of people who drink them. Drip-brewed coffees contain from 60 to 180 milligrams (mgs) of caffeine per 5-ounce cup. Instant coffees tend to be lower in caffeine, ranging from 40 to 110 mg per 5 ounces.“

„A day without a latte, cup of tea, or caffeinated soft drink is unthinkable for many people. Yet caffeine poses some health risks. Although individuals seem to differ in their vulnerability to caffeine’s influence, if drunk in moderation, the risks appear negligible.“

„The effects on blood pressure are most likely when caffeine is taken in excessive quantities or by highly sensitive people. In particular, people who are hypertensive (have habitual high blood pressure), are advised to avoid caffeinated drinks, while pregnant women are advised to limit their intake of caffeinated drinks to less than 300mg per day.“

„The caffeine in coffee is often targeted as the cause of coffee's negative effects, such as jittery nerves. Another health concern pinned on caffeinated coffee is that it may boost blood levels of homocysteine, a protein component associated with an increase risk of heart disease. However, a new study by Dutch researchers found that while coffee can increase blood levels of homocysteine, caffeine may well not be the only culprit.“

„While the reasons for the protective properties of caffeinated coffee are not certain, scientists suspect that the caffeine may stimulate muscles to burn fat and sugar more efficiently. Also, coffee itself contains other substances, such as substantial amounts of potassium, niacin, magnesium and antioxidants, which may positively affect glucose metabolism and insulin resistance.“

„Carbon dioxide is inexpensive to obtain and non-toxic. Like an Elvis song One might compare a naturally mellow (low acidity) cup of caffeinated coffee with a decaffeinated version of a high acidity coffee. If you prefer a coffee that is known for bitterness or acidity in the caffeinated version, the same coffee in a decaffeinated state will taste "flat" in comparison. At the same time, the other characteristics of that coffee will be brighter since they aren't masked by so much bitterness or acidity.“
