Coffee Kids | Community - Matagalpa (#)
„During a follow-up visit to Nicaragua in January 1999, Coffee Kids and Cecocafen discussed long-term economic development strategies that would move beyond relief efforts and would continue the process of rebuilding and community development. During a series of meetings with the Cecocafen staff and community members, Coffee Kids Program Coordinators explained how an innovative economic empowerment model that originated in Mexico could be adapted to meet the needs of Matagalpa's coffee-farming families. This highly successful economic empowerment model, known as GMAS (Groups of Women Saving in Solidarity), has been benefiting thousands of families in Mexico since 1996 and seemed a viable alternative for families in Nicaragua. In June 1999, an economic empowerment program--tailored to meet the needs of the individuals, families, and communities in Matagalpa--was successfully implemented.“
