Evidence of the urgency of the current crisis in coffee growing communities was expressed in a recent Wall Street Journal story dated July 8, 2002: "In lush coffee-growing regions from Central America to Africa, the collapse of world coffee prices is contributing to societal meltdowns affecting an estimated 125 million people, [resulting in] a combustible brew of unemployment, hunger and migration. Whole rural communities are disappearing." Stark's Resolution states, "In the context of the global economy, consumer choices affect communities and the environment throughout the world." Based on the 2001 National Coffee Association study, American coffee drinkers have the largest opportunity to effect these changes. It shows that 80% of adults in the US drink coffee, making us the world's largest coffee consuming nation. Our country drinks an estimated 20% of the world's coffee--more than half of this is grown by small family farmers in the tropical regions of Latin America, Asia, and Africa.“

„However, the proportion of moderate-to-heavy coffee drinkers among controls hospitalized for conditions that may have caused them to alter their diet (eg, gastrointestinal disorders and cardiovascular disease) was lower than that among population controls. In contrast, the proportion of moderate-to-heavy coffee drinkers among controls hospitalized for conditions that probably did not cause a change in diet (eg, fractures) was almost identical to that among population controls. These results suggest that, in hospital-based case-control studies of the effects of coffee consumption, it would be prudent to restrict the referent group to those patients hospitalized for conditions that probably did not cause a change in diet. The magnitude of bias resulting from failure to exclude controls hospitalized for diet-altering conditions will depend on two factors that may vary between studies: (1) the distribution of diet-altering conditions among the hospital controls, and (2) the relationship of these diseases to coffee consumption.“

„A case control study from the USA published in 1981 suggesting a two to three fold increase in risk of pancreatic cancer associated with drinking three or more cups of coffee per day stimulated an enormous amount of research in this area (37). In 1987 a pooled analysis of nine epidemiological studies gave a relative risk of 1.3 for moderate coffee drinkers and 1.6 for heavy coffee drinkers when the original study was included in the analysis but only 1.2 and 1.4 when it was excluded (38). By 1990 when thirty epidemiological studies were reviewed it was concluded that the evidence did not support the hypothesis that coffee consumption increases the risk of pancreatic cancer (39). In 1991 twenty-six case control studies were reviewed and it was concluded that “the data are suggestive of a weak relationship between high levels of coffee consumption and the occurrence of pancreatic cancer, but the possibility that this is due to bias or confounding is tenable” (3).“
