The Coffee Review - the world's leading coffee buying guide

„Also keep in mind that North-American coffee professionals tend to favor bold, big coffees alive with the dry sensation called acidity. Neither boldness nor intense acidity are virtues of Caribbean coffees, which, like most grown in areas subject to coastal weather, are at best full, fragrant and balanced rather than decisive and authoritative. Some of our panelists (by their own admission) are unable to muster much genuine enthusiasm for gentler coastal coffees from origins like Hawaii and the Caribbean. If we were to mount a panel of European cuppers, who historically have been much more partial to soft-profile, balanced coffees than Americans, we might see different results.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=31 - Cached

„Despite the potential value of shade coffee for bird populations, only Greenberg and coworkers (1997a) have quantified some aspects of resource use by birds in shade plantations. Therefore, the objective of this study is to describe where and how birds forage in shade coffee plantations to determine the food resources utilized by birds in shade coffee plantations in the Dominican Republic on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola. These observations will allow us to evaluate the importance of the shade overstory relative to the coffee understory in attracting birds to coffee plantations.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ wunderle0698.html - Cached
„ Obviously, our client didn’t share any of our reservations, as the coffee bar was stunning—contemporary with a true Caribbean feel. In the midst of the impoverishment, the coffeehouse boasted small, hand-crafted tin roofs covering the entire bar area, and the décor was a mix of soothing, pastel colors complementing indigenous artwork. What took us by surprise the most, however, was the ingenuity of our client to have cut a grand, arching opening in the wall between the coffee bar and his pizza business next door so people could easily walk from one business to the other.“http://www.freshcup.com/aug03_sharing.htm - Cached

„In 1723, a young naval officer, Gabriel de Clieu obtained a seedling from the King's plant. Despite an arduous voyage -- complete with horrendous weather, a saboteur who tried to destroy the seedling and a pirate attack -- he managed to transport it safely to Martinique. Once planted, the seedling thrived and is credited with the spread of over 18 million coffee trees on the island of Martinique in the next 50 years. It was also the stock from which coffee trees throughout the Caribbean, South and Central America originated. “http://www.ncausa.org/public/pages/ index.cfm?pageid=68 - Cached

„In the Caribbean, the indigenous population was quickly killed off or died of diseases introduced by Europeans, so African slaves were transported to work on the coffee and sugar plantations. By 1790, the French were growing half the world’s coffee on the island of San Domingo (now Haiti and the Dominican Republic), but a slave revolt the following year destroyed the plantations. In Brazil, the Portuguese imported African slaves to labor on the coffee plantations until 1888, when slavery was finally abolished.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0603/special.htm - Cached

„If so, it follows that this review is a snapshot of certain Caribbean coffees taken at a somewhat inopportune moment. Rather than perfectly coiffed before a dinner party, these coffees were snapped when their hair was messed up and their shirts half buttoned. In other words, this review came at a time too early for the best of this year's crop of Caribbean coffees and too late for last year's crop, which has faded over the year as green coffees tend to do.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=71 - Cached

„In countries where USAID was not involved, national coffee federations promoted the change, supporting the technification of 69 percent of Colombia's coffee and nearly 40 percent of Costa Rica's. In places including Mexico, Colombia, and parts of Central America and the Caribbean some 30 to 40 percent of all coffee land had been converted to modern reduced-shade systems by the early 1990s. Some countries, like El Salvador, missed the boat, their desultory attempts to convert slowed by war and revolution.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ bingham0899.html - Cached

„Huehuetenango coffee, however, come from a few choice plantations in the northwest highlands of Huehuetenango, west of Antigua. Guatemalan coffee is characteristically balanced in acidity, with a great big body to which all other Caribbean coffees are compared, a clean spiciness and an uncluttered bouquet. „I am a great fan of cafe culture and have been in my fair share of coffee houses and bars throughout Europe, Asia, the Caribbean and South America. As Dave says, there isn't a lot of consistency to be found and I think a lot has to do with the varying skills of the baristas that are manning the machines as well as the dreck that is supplied by most large scale commercial roasters. The owners are out to make a buck and one way is to keep the cost of supplies low.“http://www.coffeegeek.com/forums/espresso/machines/ 98763 - Cached

„Ironically, in recent years, the Caribbean island - whose coffee in the late 19th century was the favorite of kings and popes - has begun importing coffee from Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic and elsewhere just to meet local demand.
