Caffeine and Skin Cancer (INeedCoffee.com) (#)
„Conney, Professor of Pharmacology at the University of New Jersey, and his team conducted clinical trials using a caffeinated lotion on mice. They also used another active ingredient, EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate), a natural chemical found in green tea. These research findings reaffirm the beneficial effects of caffeine in preventing skin cancer, as shown by other scientific experiments starting the the 1970's (Scientists Zaidela and Latarjet, 1973 and 1978; Huang, et al, 1997; Lu, et al, 2002). At the time, the hypothesis presented was that caffeine was slowing down DNA repair after the damage produced by UV irradiation and, by slowing it down, was allowing the repair to be more precise, avoiding the mutations that lead to cancer.“

„Some studies have suggested that green tea may even help prevent cancer. Of the four primary polyphenols in green tea, research reveals that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is the most effective. Natrol's Green Tea offers a polyphenol content of 50 percent, with 25 percent of total catechins. The formula also contains 35 mg of caffeine.“

„Of all the different polyphenols, one seems to stand out above the rest. EGCG (epigallocatechin gallate) is a very powerful antioxidant and is believed to be an important player in the therapeutic qualities of green tea. How it works is still unclear, but it may inhibit cell-replication enzymes (preventing cancer growth) as well as other cellular processes that are too complicated to get into.“

„They checked for polyphenols and for chemicals produced when polyphenols break down in the body. Polyphenols included epigallocatechin (EGC) and epicatechin (EC). The presence of EGC in urine was associated with a lower risk of gastric and oesophageal cancer, even after adjusting for smoking and alcohol drinking. The researchers also adjusted for levels of carotenes, natural chemicals found in carrots, spinach and other vegetables and fruit thought to reduce the risk of cancer and other diseases, and H.“

„This study expands on a Dutch study done last year that found that heavy coffee drinkers had a substantially reduced risk of type 2 diabetes. However, that study did not separate out caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee, included fewer people over a shorter span of time, and was less rigorous in measuring coffee intake.“
