„The SCAE also used the occasion to present its first awards, in a number of unusual and light-hearted categories, to eminent coffee specialists whose contributions to the specialty cause had been particularly significant. SCAE members had nominated and voted for the winners on the Association’s website; the results, announced by SCAE vice president Tom Obracaj at a special dinner honoured the following: coffee trade veteran Alberto Hesse, for endurance; Brazilian coffee farmer, author and espresso expert Luis Norberto Pascoal for enthusiasm; Kataro Maruyama of Japan as young entrepreneur; Coffee Fund originator Walter Zwald of Switzerland for bold initiative; SCAE education committee chair Samuel Zenger of Swiss roaster Blaser Café as silent achiever; the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association as miracle maker; renowned coffee scientist Dr Ernesto Illy for vision of quality; Alliance for Coffee Excellence (which runs the Cup of Excellence competitions) for producers’ interest; and Chiapas, Mexico-based estate Finca Irlanda for true sustainability. The SCAE also honoured two of its own as honorary members—Alberto Hesse and Alf Kramer. Next year, the SCAE said, it is planned that the awards will be based on a whole new set of categories to recognise more of the sector’s achievers.“

„The Rimini gathering served as well as the first showcase of a number of innovative ideas on the competition front. In conjunction with the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association (BSCA), the SCAE organised the Brazil Late Harvest Naturals Competition, which brought a number of new crop natural coffees to the attention of cuppers, by presenting them for evaluation under strict Cup of Excellence rules. The winning coffee, announced by the SCAE’s Steven Hurst and Alf Kramer, and José Francisco Pereira, BSCA president, was a pure Bourbon from Fazenda Cachoiera, a BSCA member in the Sul de Minas growing region.“

„On December 1st, many jury members from the Cup of Excellence Competition 2003 visited coffee shops which serve BSCA certified specialty coffees. Coffee shops visited: Suplicy Cafés Especiais, Cafeteria Lenat, Café Zim (Braúna) and Cafeera.“

The Brazilian Specialty Coffee Association is promoting a series of actions with its own resources for many years and during this time it developed a partnership with international importers and representatives in the following markets: United States, United Kingdom, Germany; Switzerland; Italy; Spain and Japan. For sales to continue their ascending path in those markets we have to give support to our present clients and conquer new buyers through visits, lectures, samples, promotions and specialty coffee sampling.“

The SCAE Awards for Coffee Excellence
„As any of us who are active in the promotion of specialty coffee excellence knows, financial gain is not a factor in our participation. But Jeff, who continues to stretch his own budget in order to sponsor such vents as the Barista Jam, the first ever Barista Guild party, held at Coffee Fest Seattle in October, 2003, as well as making funds available to send his baristas to origin and encourage them to volunteer with such groups as a local organization that teaches barista skills to underprivileged youths, has a passion and commitment to barista excellence that is beyond comparison in the United States.“
