„I've seen this firsthand in Jamaica, where 100 percent Blue Mountain Coffee, grown only on one side and at certain altitudes of the fabled Blue Mountains, fetches $35 and more a pound, with most of it sold prior to harvest to Japanese and European dealers. Yet many of the farms seem to be out of another century: donkeys traverse tiny dirt paths through lush jungle; teenage boys in bare feet use handmade wooden rakes to spread the green beans on concrete slabs to dry; little girls and women package the roasted beans in burlap bags, working on treadle sewing machines; older women sit for eight hours a day pasting labels on tins with a toothbrush and bowl of white glue. Yes, these jobs feed their families and afford security--many of the families have worked on the same coffee plantations for generations.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/.../ santacruz080200.html.pf - Cached

„However, this Blue Mountain exhibited almost every characteristic of the great BlueMountains of years past: tremendous, ringingly deep dimension, perfect balance of sweetnessand acidity, and absolutely cleanly expressed fruit, a kind of essence of coffee fruit. I admit that Idid register a couple of missing elements: The body was excellent, but not quite as big andbouillon-like as the Platonic Blue Mountains of memory, plus a slight, slight astringency mayhave imbalanced the finish. But these are quibbles, occasioned more by my lust for BlueMountain perfection than by any failing of pleasure generated by that particular cup at thatparticular moment in time.“http://www.coffeereview.com/article.cfm?id=69 - Cached

„In the mid-1970s, when I first tasted Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee from a mill that exported a famous mark called Wallensford Estate, it was indeed a splendid coffee: without drama, perhaps, but extraordinarily rich, balanced, resonant and complete. In the 1970s and 1980s, however, the Coffee Industry Board began investing in Jamaica Blue Mountain with money provided by Japanese interests. New mills were constructed that use a short-cut version of the wet-processing method called aquapulping or mechanical demucilaging, and volume increased dramatically while quality decreased despite the Coffee Industry Board's efforts to maintain it.“http://www.coffeereview.com/reference.cfm?id=55 - Cached

„by Ryan Jacobs | Print Friendly Version | Email This Article Imagine the following scenario: You have just come home from your favorite coffee shop with two pounds of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee, freshly roasted. Normally, you wouldn't buy so much at one time, but it was a steal at $20 a pound! Realizing that you won't be able to drink this within a week, you decide that you need to find a better place to store your highly prized (and priced) coffee to best preserve its flavor.“http://www.ineedcoffee.com/99/07/storage/ - Cached

„For instance Steward Allen Lee writes that Japanese companies purchase the entire crop of Blue Mountain Coffee and another high quality specialized ground called Monkey Coffee collected from the droppings of a palm toddy cat that lives mostly an alcoholic bean but also particularly ripe and succulent coffee and its acidic bowls produce a very high grade ground. While THE DEVIL'S CUP is neither a travelogue or coffee history, it has changed the way I drink a cup coffee.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/1569471746/ - Cached

„Hawaii Kona and Jamaica Blue Mountain may be better known than Kenya among casual coffee drinkers, but among those who genuinely know coffee and buy for quality as well as name, Kenya is much more respected. Hence the relatively high prices commanded by the three Kenyas in the review, higher, in fact, than either of the reviewed fair-trade coffees. False Alternatives?“http://www.virtualcoffee.com/articles/summer03/ article2.html - Cached

„Well, how about this: an experimental program between a Kona coffee farmer with one of the highest altitude, prime coffee gardens in Kona and the University of Hawaii coffee project growing 100% pure Jamaica Blue Mountain seedstock (which as you may know IS its own var. of arabica typica). The coffee is perfectly prepped, not the JBM Wallenford with pale old coffee and berry-boring bug damage.“http://www.sweetmarias.com/tiny_joy_html/ tj.july00.html - Cached
„There are only 4 trade names that can legally call their product Blue Mountain coffee: Wallenford, Mavis Bank, Old Tavern and one other I can never remember. True Blue Mountain is actually grown at higher altitudes than most other island coffees, and much of Mavis Bank's farms are at 5000 feet. Nonetheless, it has the soft cup profile.“http://www.sweetmarias.com/ coffee.islands.jamaica.html - Cached
