BBC News | The Economy | Asian crisis boosts coffee market (#)
„Hurricane Mitch destroyed much of Nicaragua's infrastructureCrop losses of up to 50% in Honduras and 25% in Nicaragua, however, did not effect the coffee market, says Mr. Shaw: "Mitch has no impact on the New York C-index, which is the main future market for Arabica-coffee." Julia Powell from Fairtrade said: "In terms of quantity, Mitch had no effect on the global coffee market, although it had a dramatic impact on the farmers". Her organisation buys coffee directly from small farmer co-operatives. The floods destroyed the crop, but also great parts of the infrastructure on which the coffee economy depends.“

„Losses of the coffee crop have been heaviest in Nicaragua, where officials estimate that 20-30% of coffee production has been lost. But up to 25% of the crop in Guatemala, the biggest producer, is at risk, while hundreds of thousands of bags of coffee have been destroyed in Costa Rica, Honduras and El Salvador. Coffee prices may rise because of the hurricaneEstimates of the damage have been hampered by the destruction of transport links, which has meant it has been impossible to reach the plantations to make an assessment. The road damage has also put the remainder of the crop at risk.“

„In Nicaragua, the project gave special assistance to PRODECOOP , a small farmers co-op, as they worked to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Mitch. By serving coffee grown by these farmers, parishioners also help the co-op invest in farm improvements, reduce bank debt, improve nutrition, and provide administrative training for members.“

„In addition to the recent Honduras auction, El Salvador and Nicaragua farmers also held successful Cup of Excellence auctions this summer for their winning coffees. Between the three auctions, 85 coffee lots were sold to 23 U.S. companies, 22 European companies representing England, Scotland, Ireland, France, Denmark, the Netherlands, Iceland, Spain, France, Norway and Germany, 19 Japanese companies and 1 Canadian company. The Cup of Excellence family is growing as an increasing array of international roasters support the efforts of quality farmers from a variety of countries.“

„For example, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Bridgman, MI, members raised funds for relief efforts in Nicaragua in the wake of Hurricane Mitch. The Wayne County Peace Coalition in Ohio used Equal Exchange coffee as a fundraiser to help build a clinic for a sister community in El Salvador. And while they supported these special projects, these congregations also helped small farmers earn a better living and strengthen their own communities.“

„Germans have not benefited from tax cuts "You can't blame the government wholly because they have introduced structural tax reforms which have helped (to stimulate the economy) but were largely cancelled out by the high the oil price," says Mr Hausen. Germany's main trade union body, the Deutscher Gewerkschaftsbund (DGB) agrees. "The government has done everything it can within the confines and can't always stimulate the economy because you have to be careful the deficit doesn't get too big," says the DGB's chief economist Wolfgang Scheremet. "The weakness is not because of any mistake of the government's but due to high energy costs and the global economic downturn." German stimulus Last year the Schroeder government restructured business and personal taxation by limiting corporate taxes to 36% while the top band of income tax was to be cut from over 50% to 42% by 2005.“
