BBC NEWS | Health | Caffeine 'does not raise blood pressure' (#)
„"This demonstrates how little we know about the effects of one of our most popular beverages and the most abundantly consumed stimulant worldwide." The researchers measured blood pressure, heart rate and nervous system activity in 15 healthy volunteers. Six were habitual coffee drinkers and nine either abstained or drank coffee only occasionally. The volunteers were given either a full strength triple espresso, a decaffeinated version, an intravenous injection of caffeine or a placebo. Both types of espresso stimulated a significant jump in blood pressure among those who were not regular coffee drinkers.“

„ Over 95 percent of espresso beverages consumed in North America are milk-based; this alone seems to justify bad espresso. The addition of milk and syrups, however, may hide bad espresso, but they don't make it better. Imagine how much more flavorful a latte would be if the underlying espresso tasted better.“

„Coffee has a much higher total in-vitro antioxidant activity than other commonly consumed beverages. This is due in part to intrinsic compounds of coffee such as chlorogenic acid, in part to compounds formed during coffee bean roasting such as melanoidins and in part to as yet unidentified compounds. It is widely believed that antioxidants protect against the development of chronic diseases including heart disease and cancer but whether the antioxidants characteristic of coffee have such effects remains to be determined“
