„But producer countries, led by the Ivory Coast, are pressing for manufacturers to pay more, saying that is the only way to prevent child slavery. In May, ministers from the Ivory Coast went to London to tell the UK government that without higher prices nothing could prevent poverty-stricken cocoa farmers from using forced labour. „I ask for good reason. I'm sitting writing this column on my new, highly accessible, pocket PC, in a coffee bar on the ground floor of a well-known hospital in London. I'm here for a regular blood test. Annoyingly it has gone rather badly and they've had to give me a different kind of test, the results of which are not due for a couple of hours.“

„London coffee futures jumped by 5%, hitting a two-year high of $743 a tonne. But it will take a more sustained rally to bail out Vietnam's economy, which has suffered from its growing reliance on the crop. „"Funnily enough, the British knew nothing about coffee. But, hey, instant coffee could be made within the commercial break However, tea could not, as you need five minutes to make a cup of leaf tea. Hence the introduction of teabags, which now like instant coffee could be made in the commercial break. But did we really need to have monkey [PG Tips] show us how to make a cup of tea," he says cheekily.“

„The most popular venues for trade were the numerous coffee houses in the city. Here the merchants would sell their wholesale goods to shopkeepers. It was also in these coffee houses that merchants would complain bitterly about the number of losses they were sustaining as a result of cargoes being lost at sea. Some businessmen, sensing an opportunity, began to make deals whereby they promised to reimburse to the merchants the value of the cargo if it did not arrive at port in a fit state for sale. In return for this insurance they demanded a premium. The value of the premium varied with the value of the cargo and, more importantly, with the risk being undertaken.“
