BBC NEWS | Business | New shares offer for ethical firm ()

„It is trying to raise £3.25m ($5m) by offering shares to the public in London but, as the company itself says, this is no ordinary issue of shares. Traidcraft intends to provide investors with financial returns. But it says the principal return for shareholders will be the knowledge that they are helping poor producers and their communities to fight poverty. Paying a dividend "We want people to invest, not because they think they're going to make a lot of money out of us but because of what we can do for the sake of poor people," says Traidcraft's chief executive Paul Chandler.“

„But like everything, not everyone loves them. For some people, these American-style trendy coffee shops are overpriced. Others refuse to buy from them, on the grounds that they feel these chains hugely exploit the coffee farmers and yet charge high prices and therefore reap huge profits.“

„But producer countries, led by the Ivory Coast, are pressing for manufacturers to pay more, saying that is the only way to prevent child slavery. BBC - h2g2 - Lloyd's of London BBC - h2g2 - Lloyd's of London

„The most popular venues for trade were the numerous coffee houses in the city. Here the merchants would sell their wholesale goods to shopkeepers. It was also in these coffee houses that merchants would complain bitterly about the number of losses they were sustaining as a result of cargoes being lost at sea. Some businessmen, sensing an opportunity, began to make deals whereby they promised to reimburse to the merchants the value of the cargo if it did not arrive at port in a fit state for sale. In return for this insurance they demanded a premium. The value of the premium varied with the value of the cargo and, more importantly, with the risk being undertaken.“

„I ask for good reason. I'm sitting writing this column on my new, highly accessible, pocket PC, in a coffee bar on the ground floor of a well-known hospital in London. I'm here for a regular blood test. Annoyingly it has gone rather badly and they've had to give me a different kind of test, the results of which are not due for a couple of hours.“
