Although the steam ships bringing teas from India, Ceylon and Africa frequently berthed further down river, their cargoes would be brought up as far as London Bridge in the Clipper ships during the 1880's by barges. This area became the centre of the UK tea trade. The London tea trade has conducted the business of unloading ships, marketing and blending on both sides of the Thames at London Bridge and although the tea auctions were held north of the river, the South Bank boasted the most prestigious warehousing facilities.“
