BBC - History - The Pals Battalions in World War One (#)
„Furthermore, for many in the industrial heartlands of the North - as in Scotland, Wales and Ireland - the army promised a break from the grinding poverty of everyday life. Army life meant regular pay (one shilling a day for privates) as well as proper food and clothing, not to mention barracks that would most probably have compared favourably with the living conditions experienced by many at the time. Even with an establishment eager to recruit, many would-be volunteers were rejected on medical grounds, suffering from the cumulative effects of poor diet, medicine and housing.“

„After roasting, the bean needs to be ground. Ground coffee has a greater surface area than the whole bean, so the hot water can get to it more quickly and release the flavours. However, excessive grinding will cause the oils to evaporate and the coffee to taste bitter and acidic. Once roasted and ground the coffee is ready for brewing.“

„Dr Kathy Fulcher: When you cut out certain proteins from the diet, and cut down on the amount of fat in your diet you may miss out on certain vitamins and minerals, these include vitamins, A, E, and also maybe lacking in Omega 3 and Omega 6 oils, which are found in fish, such as salmon, tuna, mackeral, herring. Make sure you eat 3 servings of fish per week, I recommend you take a supplement such as a fish oil or cod liver oil.“

„"Four large coffee companies buy nearly half the world's crop and make huge profits but we calculate only around 5% of the retail price reaches the farmer. "Coffee now costs more to grow and pick than it does to sell." The fair trade movement says it tries to ensure the farmers are guaranteed a price which provides them with a living income.“
