BBC - History - Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626) ()

„Francis Bacon was born into a position of great privilege, the sixth son of Sir Nicholas Bacon, Keeper of the Great Seal for Elizabeth I. He studied to become a lawyer at Gray's Inn from 1579 to 1582, and it was soon apparent that he had a brilliant legal mind. Yet he remained unpopular with Elizabeth, and it was only on the accession of James I in 1603 that his career started to move in the right direction.“

Amazon.com: Kitchen & Housewares: Bodum Eileen 4-Cup Coffee Press Amazon.com: Kitchen & Housewares: Bodum Eileen 4-Cup Coffee Press

„This 4-cup coffee press is so handsome, you'll want to display it front and center on the kitchen counter, not hide it away in a cabinet. Its striking modern lines are a fitting tribute to Eileen Gray, the Irish designer and architect who adopted the cafés and salons of Paris as her home. The elegantly patterned stainless-steel frame is easy on the eyes but also protects the glass jug within, and the squared handle is easy to grip even when the press is full of boiling water.“

BBC News | AMERICAS | California blackout: Why it happened BBC News | AMERICAS | California blackout: Why it happened

„California Governor Gray Davis declared a state of emergency and ordered a state agency to buy power to pass on to the utilities. But it is a quick-fix solution - which may have turned the cappuccino machines back on for the moment, but does not resolve the underlying crisis.“

BBC News | From Our Own Correspondent | Pol Pot remembered BBC News | From Our Own Correspondent | Pol Pot remembered

„always in the quietest of tones"Elizabeth Becker of the New York Times, author of 'When the War is Over', is one of the few westerners ever to have met Pol Pot. She sent this personal report to the BBC's 'From Our Own Correspondent': It has been 18 years since I met him at the height of his power and even though my interview lasted little more than a few hours, it was long enough to give me a touchstone that I have used ever since, to help me figure out what Pol Pot may be up to, how and why he could evade and bully his way out of one trap after another, and whether the belated efforts to capture him might work. It was 22 December 1978, a cool sunny afternoon in Phnom Penh, the last day of a unique two week trip to Democratic Kampuchea. The Khmer Rouge had only invited select communist journalists to their country before my trip and - with the exception of the film produced by a gifted Yugoslav television crew - little had been revealed by those communists.“
