BBC - h2g2 - How Do You Make a Little Money Go a Long Way? (#)
„Drink it cold instead of sodas or on mornings when I'm too rushed to make a fresh carafe. A pound of good, whole coffee beans costs a little more than two Starbucks drinks, and lasts for at least two or three weeks, depending on your rate of consumption.“

„But they stress that it could do so much more. They want Starbucks to brew Fair Trade coffee more often, rather than simply offering the beans for sale. This year, for example, Starbucks will buy a million pounds of Fair Trade coffee, less than 1% of the company's total purchases. For its part, Starbucks resents being picked on.“

„But why are coffee prices in the supermarkets and cafes stable while world coffee prices fluctuate? Many of the expenses incurred - for example taxes, customs charges and wage costs to coffee roasters - are fixed. The fixed costs account for a large proportion of the price paid by consumers in the UK, while the fluctuating world price for coffee is but a small part of the total. In addition, the big coffee processors, like for example Kraft, Sara Lee, Procter & Gamble and Nestle, will hedge their risks using financial futures contracts, and this will stabilise the prices they pay for green coffee.“

„Does anyone know where I can find empty Starbucks coffee bags? I want to make some purses and totes for myself like in this picture but I cannot seem to use up enough beans fast enough to get all the materials I need. If anyone wants to send me their used up foil starbucks bean bags that they would just throw away anyway that would be cool.“

„Starbucks has also upped the quantities of Fair Trade coffee it buys. To purchase Fair Trade coffee, a buyer must pay a minimum of $1.26 per pound for green arabica beans.“

„The roast of the beans will be a major factor in the taste of your coffee. French Roast and many Starbucks coffees are made of beans that have been roasted to a dark color, giving the coffee an intense taste. It is a roaster’s task to bring out a bean’s characteristics through an appropriate roast level.“
