BBC - Gloucestershire Food and Drink - Atkins Diet fans bite back at health (#)
„As ye tmy sweet cravings haven't gone away - but I'm still hoping they will. I just had to given in this morning and made myself a cup of decaf coffee with half a tablespoon of cream and some sweetner. There is a definite difference that showed my sweet tooth is dimishing as it was much too sweet, so much so I had to make another cup with half the amount of my normal sweetner in. I'm going to persevere as this is obviously working.“

„In addition, the added costs of shipping to and from decaffeination facilities makes the decaffeinator’s cost structure vulnerable to increases in transportation costs. Further, delays in custom’s entries, exacerbated by the tragic events of 9/11, have increased the costs of financing and made the costs of “pipeline fill” for roasters vis-a-vis decaf coffee somewhat greater. All of this adds up to more pressure on the decaffeinator than is in the tank of a supercritical carbon dioxide processor, and that’s a lot.“

„Why yes, as a matter of fact, you do. When you pull out your supply of green decaf beans the physical differences between regular and decaffeinated beans is striking. Compared to the unprocessed beans, which are plump and green, the decaf appear stunted: and shriveled, with a brownish tint, almost as if they were already roasted. What path have these beans traveled to lose that component called caffeine, and take on this striking difference?“

„Additionally, as one marketer of decaffeinated coffee noted, off the record, “Our proprietary consumer research told me that as the population gets older it also gets wiser - at least people want to see themselves that way - that it’s one of the compensations for getting older and that their superior knowledge gives them an edge. They want to feel hip and current about the latest wines, ingredients, and coffees. But they’re also concerned about what they’re putting in their bodies and the long term effects of each and every chemical they’re putting in their bodies.“

„Do swiss water processed beans look different after roasting than other methods of decaffienation? See I ordered some SWP decaf coffee, they are the blackest and oiliest beans I have EVER seen. Plus they taste completely charred. The roaster I got them from insists that she in fact underroasted them, and they only look that way because they are SWP.“
