CoffeeGeek - Starbucks Barista - Brendan Getchel's Review (#)

„For the sake of experiment, we traded machines for a full week and both commented that there was no operational or final product difference whatsoever. The only difference is that the Rio uses a pressurized Portafilter, which actually produces more consistent shots than if I use the Barista‘s filter (apologies to the elitists), something which my neighbor actually went out and purchased for his Barista because of its greater consistency. If I had a Silvia or a Livia 90 (EDIT: I now have a Livia 90, and obviously do NOT use a pressurized PF on her), I‘d obviously run from such a contraption, but in a low-end machine like the Barista/Vapore it‘s a welcome addition.“

CoffeeGeek - Espresso: Machines and Grinders, got my barista...not sure about a few things. (#)

„how hard should i be tamping it?Due to the nature of the pressureized portafilter, a light tamp just to flatten the grounds in the portafilter is all that is necessary. Watch the video that came with the Barista. With the non-pressurized portafilter, 30 pounds should be a starting guideline.  Because the grinder cannot be as minutely adjusted so as to get a 2 oz shot from 14 grams at 30 pounds tamp in 25 seconds, the tamp becomes a variable you will use to adjust to get the desired shot results.“
