Robusta Coffees for Home Roast Espresso Blends

„This lot is from the Cannoncadoo Estate and was judged the Best Robusta from the Coorg State in the India Fine Cup competition in 2004. The farm is situated at 3,770 feet and processed using the traditional wet-process methods used on many arabica coffees. I would use this in an espresso blend between 10-25% (more than I would normally put, but this is an exceptional robusta). This coffee, like other robusta, adds rich-colored crema to the espresso cup, but also has great flavor attributes that you will not find in common arabicas; it actually has a very sharp chocolate aroma with sweet hints, and a dark-roasted nut character that reflects the level of roast you choose (I prefered 455-460 probed bean temp, a light Vienna roast of Full City ++).“http://www.sweetmarias.com/coffee.robusta.html - Cached

„the coffee belt... there are two types of coffee: Robusta (which is used in instant coffee and only grows below 1500 meters) and Arabica (which is a finer coffee which only grows above 1500 meters). I was amazed to discover that coffee grows as two green beans inside a bright red cherry, the finest coffee is hand-picked by small poor farmer, subject to weather and market fluctuations and can pass through as many as fifty hands on its way to my cup each making a buck on the way, except the farmers. Frenzied trading All Arabica coffee is traded on the coffee, sugar and cocoa exchange in New York where in frenzied trading pits producers, roasters and scalpers shout at the top of their voices and wave their hands frantically trading future contracts of coffee in units of 38,500 pounds without a coffee bean in sight.“http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/business/newsid_1505000/ 1505787.stm - Cached

CoffeeGeek - Coffee Crisis: TechnoServe Releases Fact-Based Industry Analysis

„The systemic shift is also the result of processors developing ways to reduce the acidity of Robusta coffee beans and increase their use in blends and in increasingly popular "flavored" coffees that mask the harsh taste. Robusta coffee plants have higher yields than Arabica plants; in addition, they are stronger plants that grow at lower altitudes, enabling them to be mechanically harvested. For these reasons, Robusta coffee is cheaper to produce than the Arabica variety and so is also becoming increasingly popular among consumers in more price-sensitive countries, further eroding the market share for Arabica.“http://www.coffeegeek.com/resources/pressreleases/ technoservedec42003 - Cached

„The cost of production (1995 costs) varied, depending on the size of holdings, between 37.2 to 47.2 US cents/lb (82.01 to 116.09 US cents/kg) in Arabica holdings and 28.3 to 38.3 US cents/lb (62.39 to 84.44 US cents/kg) in Robusta holdings. The cost of establishment (for a four-year period at 1995 prices) was approximately US$1,600/ha for Arabica and US$1,200/ha for Robusta. If amortization of the establishment cost is taken into consideration (at an interest rate of 15 percent) the cost of Arabica increases by 10 US cents/lb and that of Robusta by 8 US cents/lb.“http://www.ico.org/libser/india.htm - Cached

„By 1869, this variety showed severe attack by rust and in the following year, Stanley Jupp is credited with identifying the "Coorgs" variety in Coorg, which performed better at that time. After the introduction of liberica and robusta in 1880's and 1900's a number of hybrids were identified or developed by planters such as 'Hamilton's' hybrid, 'Chandrapore' hybrid, 'Jackson's' hybrid, 'Netraconda' hybrid etc., which were hybrids of liberica x arabica or robusta x arabica. These hybrids although showing good resistance to rust proved to be poor yielding because of sterility problems (Narasimhaswamy, 1950).“http://www.indiacoffee.org/newsletter/5/ plantersworld.html - Cached
„The older varieties of arabica produce the best flavor, and these somewhat fragile, older varietals require partial shade to protect the cherries from getting too much sun. Although the best tasting arabicas are grown at high elevation, the overnight temperature cannot drop below freezing; arabica trees cannot survive frost. Elevations between 4,000 and 6,000 feet provide cooler nighttime temperatures so the cherry's growth is slower, yielding more concentrated flavors and better acidity. Volcanic soil is rich in nutrients and provides good drainage.“http://www.peets.com/.../ coffee_growing.asp?sid=a6842ce81c445f14b5ac67faec34539d - Cached
„Typica - This is the base from which many coffee cultivars have been developed. Like the other Arabica cultivars that have been developed from it, Typica plants have a conical shape with a main vertical trunk and secondary verticals that grow at a slight slant. Typica is a tall plant reaching 3.5-4 m in height. The lateral branches form 50-70° angles with the vertical stem. Typica has a very low production, but has an excellent cup quality.“http://www.coffeeresearch.org/agriculture/ varietals.htm - Cached

„The key to Khe Sanh's survival is arabica, a pricier bean than the robusta variety most Vietnamese farmers grow. Vo Danh Ke, who owns 2.7 hectares of arabica bushes near the village, says they earned him the money to buy a new motorcycle, a television, floor tiles and roofing. His neighbour, Dang Sy Tich, explains how he made enough from his arabica crop to pay off his initial investment in land in just four years. The price has fallen recently, he concedes, but he is still earning a better living than he did growing cassava and rice.“http://www.globalexchange.org/campaigns/fairtrade/coffee/ 1737.html - Cached
„Both Arabica and Robusta coffees are grown in Ecuador. Typica, Bourbon, and Caturra Arabica cultivars are common and are either dry- or wet-processed. It is difficult to find Ecuadorian coffee in the United States. Kenneth David's describes it as an unremarkable coffee, with a medium body, and sharp acidity (60).“http://www.coffeeresearch.org/coffee/ ecuador.htm - Cached

In Eastern Ethiopia, coffee trees are grown between 5,000 and 6,000 feet on small peasant plots and farms. These coffees may be called longberry Harrar (large bean), shortberry Harrar (smaller bean) or Mocha Harrar (peaberry or single bean).“http://www.coffeeuniverse.com/ world_coffee_africa.html - Cached

„As a trade term, however, Brazils refers to lower-grade coffees that are grown at relatively low altitudes and are mass harvested and carelessly dried. Most of these mass-produced arabica coffees are grown in Brazil, but some are produced in East Africa and the Pacific. These coffees, at worse, taste harsh, sour or fermented, at best display a middle-of-the-road, neutral flavor with a flat aroma. Most decent supermarket canned blends contain large proportions of Brazils or similar coffees, with smaller additions of high-grown milds.“http://www.coffeereview.com/reference.cfm?id=6 - Cached
„A normal characteristic of arabica coffees, particularly of high-growth varieties. Some strains are sought for this particular taste (Kenya), which is influenced by the degree of roasting and does not seem to be objectively expressed by pH measurement. Experts recognize three types of acidity: 1) natural desirable: acid, 2) natural undesirable: sour, and 3) undesirable: process acidity (sometimes sought as a substitute for natural acidity but generally has a biting, puckery flavor.“http://www.lucidcafe.com/glossary.html - Cached

„For so long most of the greens coming out of the island were robusta. These days there are significant plantings of arabica too. Problem is most of the arabica is coop grown...a co-op in many cases can include growers over a wide geograpical area. The cherries are collected and dried at various processing facilities and of course the cherries from the member farms are mixed in together.“http://www.coffeeforums.com/ viewtopic.php?t=852&start=0 - Cached
„ While coffee can be grown from sea level to c.6,000 ft (1,830 m), and C. robusta is produced at low elevations in West Africa, the better Arabica grades are generally produced above 1,500 ft (460 m). Strong winds limit coffee production; coffee is often grown in the shelter of taller trees. A coffee tree yields its maximum sometime between its fifth and tenth year and may bear fruit for about 30 years.“http://www.britishcoffeeassociation.org/ id27.htm - Cached

„This species is normally purchased as a 'filler' bean for canned coffees toreduce the roasters cost. Robusta has twice the caffeine content of Arabica. In fact,Robusta takes less time to mature, typically half the time needed for Arabica beans, andtend to yield twice as many cherries. It is also low in flavor and aroma, and is lessexpensive.“http://www.koffeekorner.com/koffeesources.htm - Cached
