„Along the way, he summarizes the latest scientific information while outlining prospects for future research. Although this is a scholarly book, not a how-to manual, Clark does discuss strategies for extending the average human life by caloric restriction (reductions of 20% to 25% seem to be required) and the use of antioxidants (natural forms found in fruits and vegetables appear to be much more effective than supplements). He also does a nice job of exploring the causes of Alzheimer's disease, various forms of cancer and an array of genetic disorders that afflict the young by making them age prematurely. Finally, in this neatly informative work, Clark uses a sociological and political perspective to probe the tensions likely to arise between length of life and quality of life as medical advances continue to accumulate, and to consider the broad ramifications inherent in an aging population.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0195125932/ - Cached

„Adopting this Ideal Diet should be enough to improve your health, immunity, cardiovascular system, digestion, hormonal equilibrium, physical performance, bones, skin, intelligence & memory, fight stress, cancer, infections, overweight & obesity, avoid diseases and improve your overall quality of life. It talks about vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemical substances, aminoacids, enzymes, anti-nutrients and so on, and justifies why food supplements should be taken regularly even if your diet is already perfect. I am now a regular consumer of a multi vitamin & mineral complex, vitamin C, magnesium and zinc for specific deficiencies, and also essential fat acids (Omega-3: salmon-EPA-DHA and shark oil and Omega 6-Onagra-GLA) .It also introduces the concept of SONA (suggested optimal nutrient allowances) - whose quantities, in some cases, are 10 times higher than Dept.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/ 1580910157?v=glance - Cached

„However, there is now significant scientific information available on a number of positive health effects of coffee drinking, including its high content of antioxidants. In 2001 the PSCB launched a `Positively Coffee’ pilot project to disseminate information on coffee and antioxidants to consumers. This proved successful and implementation of this positive news communication project is continuing. In addition, the International Coffee Council has endorsed the work of the Vanderbilt Institute for Coffee Studies (ICS) on identifying and promoting the positive effects of coffee in the health domain, and decided that the ICO should act as a focal point for channelling resources to the ICS project.“http://www.ico.org/activ/promotio.htm - Cached

„Moss never once mentions any foods where vitamin A is found (like liver, butter, eggs, cod liver oil, etc) and implies that one should take supplements. He also keeps repeating that people should eat lots of brightly colored fruits and vegetables every day to get their lion's share of antioxidants, but he does not inform the reader that many of the antioxidants he discusses are not found in fruits and vegetables, but in animal foods and fats only (vitamin A, for example). Zinc, selenium, CoQ10, and lipoic acid are also concentrated in foods like oysters, organ meats, seafood, and red meat--not fruits and vegetables. Of course, fruits and vegetables are good foods, but for a complete antioxidant picture, one must include organic animal foods as well.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/1881025284/ - Cached
„There is convincing evidence that oxidative damage is believed to be a major contributor to ageing and to degenerative diseases of ageing, such as cardiovascular disease, certain forms of cancer, decline of the immune system, brain dysfunction and cataracts. Antioxidants can be of great benefit in improving quality of life by preventing or postponing the onset of degenerative aging diseases. Protection against damaging free radicals can be enhanced by intakes of dietary antioxidants and coffee has been shown to be a significant source. This is further evidence that coffee drinking in moderation, 4-5 cups per day, is perfectly safe for the general population and may confer health benefits.“http://www.britishcoffeeassociation.org/ id64.htm - Cached
„Absorption of carotenes is less efficient than retinol but they are more affordable and thus a significant source of vitamin A in developing countries, if they are consumed. Consuming fruits and vegetables should be promoted in all developing countries because they supply carotenes and other important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants important for good health. Not consuming fruits and vegetables also is in the top ten health problems contributing to the global burden of disease. Protecting local sources of fruits and vegetables that are collected from the bush or forest and introducing new crops high in carotene (e.g., orange sweet potato) are essential to sustain and improve the supply of carotene and ultimately vitamin A to households.“http://wbln0018.worldbank.org/hdnet/hddocs.nsf/.../ 35e642af6e4b222285256f4e00542d0b?opendocument - Cached

US researchers gave supplements to half of a group of people whose diets were altered so they were not eating foods rich in antioxidants. When exposed to ozone, those who had taken the supplements had better lung function, and were had much higher levels of vitamins than those who had not. Participants in the study had their lungs tested The scientists believe that this shows people whose lungs have been damaged by ozone could be given supplements to improve their condition.“http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/health/newsid_1552000/ 1552074.stm - Cached

Coffee beans are one of the richest dietary sources of chlorogenic acid and for many consumers this will be their major dietary source (3). It has been reported that a 200 ml cup of arabica coffee contains between 70 and 200 mg chlorogenic acid whereas a cup of robusta coffee contains between 70 and 350 mg (3).“http://www.cosic.org/coffee-and-health/ antioxidants - Cached
