Amazon.com: Books: Max Havelaar : Or the Coffee Auctions of the Dutch Trading Company (Penguin Classics)
(#)
„Max Havelaar is an undeniably autobiographical novel; like his hero, Multatuli--the pseudonym for Eduard Douwes Dekker--was an Assistant Resident of Lebak in Java; like Havelaar in the novel, he resigned his position when his accusations of corruption and abuse were disregarded by higher authorities, resulting in years of poverty for both author and fictional hero. Max Havelaar is told from several different perspectives; the reader first meets an Amsterdam coffee dealer named Droogstoppel, a man so obsessed with coffee that his every thought and action is governed by it. Droogstoppel has come by a manuscript from an old schoolmate who, down on his luck, has asked him to get it published. The schoolmate is Havelaar, and the manuscript relates his experiences as an idealistic and generous young civil servant who tries to protect the poor and bring justice to the powerless.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0140445161/ - Cached
Tea & Coffee 06/03 - Product Showcase

„This work of fiction is set in the year is 1659 - the time when Vermeer and van Leeuwenhoek (the famous microscope maker) were in their prime - and coffee is barely making its way into Europe, thus, most people are still unaware of the magic wonders this beverage possesses. We find Miguel Lienzo, a futures trader at the Amsterdam Exchange, sitting at a bar with Geertruid, a woman who wants him to become her partner in a scheme designed to corner the coffee market. The stratagems used in the Amsterdam Exchange are quite interesting, and particularly apropos in the recent accounting scandals we are witnessing in the United States and Europe. The evil figure in the book is Solomon Parido, a powerful merchant and a parnas, who sits on the Mahamad, a four member ruling board in a Spanish-Portuguese Jewish congregation.“http://www.teaandcoffee.net/0603/product.htm - Cached
Amazon.com: Books: Who Was the Woman Who Wore the Hat?
(#)
„Grade 2-5-In this reflective poem drawn from a visit to the Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam, Patz recalls an exhibit she saw and asks, "Who was the woman/who wore the hat/I saw in the Jewish Museum?/What was she like?" In proselike poetry, the author poses questions about what the woman ate, whether she took cream in her coffee, and how she tilted her hat when she wore it. She reflects on whether the woman wore it the day she was arrested and taken to the Square in the Jewish Quarter. How did she know what she should pack, "Or how many sweaters/to put on each of her children-." Patz dramatically states on a spread with white letters against black paper that the hat might have belonged to her mother, herself, or you, the reader.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/asin/0525469990/ - Cached

„I'm currently writing a thesis (International Business and Management Studies, Amsterdam School of Business) about private label coffee. In a nutshell: I'm researching if there's possible business potential for an Italian delicacy store to offer private labels to retail shops (especially in the apparel sector) that serve their clients a 'fine cup of coffee'. The idea behind this is that retailers will create an extra bit of customer satisfaction and loyalty by serving their clients something special: a fine cup of coffee, freshly brewed and with the name of the shop on the packaging/cup/spoon etc.“http://www.coffeeforums.com/ viewtopic.php?p=1960 - Cached

„The inside gossip prefaces each section and often is more valuable than what follows - item by item critiques. The guide offers non-judgemental insights into what a tourist can expect in Amsterdam, whether it is the incredibly high cost of a hotel room or the casualness of a coffee house. It also tips the traveler off to preferred customs, local attitudes and things one wouldn't expect. The section "you probably didn't know", should be required reading for all potential visitors.“http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/isbn%3d0028637917/ - Cached
