„In alternating chapters Taylor recounts the events following the blinded 12-year-old's rescue from the remote island, and chronicles Timothy's history as well. In the tradition of its predecessor, this "prequel/sequel" explores social and racial imbalances and draws a graceful parallel between Timothy's youthful struggle to achieve an unheard-of dream--the captaincy of his own boat--and Philip's courage in choosing to undergo a risky operation to restore his vision. At times, the author seems to apologize for Timothy's illiteracy, his stubbornness and his belief in the spirits called jumbis , which seems unnecessary, given the character's obvious dignity and deep-rooted wisdom. Somewhat more thoughtful than its well-loved antecedent, this boldly drawn novel is no less commanding.“

„Focusing on international trade fairs and world's fairs of the Cold War years, Haddow recounts how exhibits with slogans such as "Industry in the Service of Mankind" and "People's Capitalism" were meant to seduce European audiences to the American way of life. Under the direction of the Eisenhower administration, and with the financial assistance of the advertising and business communities, American consumer culture was sent abroad as a "silent ambassador for democratic ideals." Haddow's background as an art historian is apparent and welcome in the attention he pays to the artists and architects involved in the actual design and production of the exhibits. Especially strong is the lengthy section on the 1958 Brussels World's Fair where the rigid ideological demands of the U.S. department of state (the overseeing governmental agency) often clashed with the modernist aesthetic of the architect Edward Durell Stone, whose free-flowing circular American pavilion owed a debt to Frank Lloyd Wright, and to the educational theories of Victor D'Amico, a director at the Museum of Modern Art.“

„Lo learned about cooking and received much wisdom from this sparrow of a woman, whose feet were bound, in the old way, when she was a child, to keep them four inches long, but who fiercely brought her daughter and granddaughter into modern times. She also taught Lo about Confucius and the ancient traditions such as the Seven Necessities of rice, tea, oil, salt, soy sauce, vinegar, and firewood.“

„Simple, rhyming text accompanies the clever pictures ("To Look-Alike Land! We're blasting full throttle/ On a spaceship that looks like a THERMOS BOTTLE."), but the real focus is the puzzle of identifying the more than 700 objects in the 11 crisply photographed double-page scenes. Younger children will enjoy this book with a parent, discovering such anomalies as train wheels made from daisies and curtains made from lasagna noodles. Older children may enjoy playing competitive games, such as taking turns finding look-alikes or racing to see who can find the most in a set amount of time.“

„"Every Move She Makes" stars San Francisco Police Inspector Kate Gillespie, a smart, tough police office with a weakness for latte's and a certain IA investigator that she can't get too close to....add into the mix an untrustworth ex, a solid mystery, and the beautiful background of San Francisco and you have all the ingredients of a good book. I hope Inspector Gillespie enjoys a nice long run, I am very much looking forward to more!“
