Amazon.com: Books: Grounds for Agreement: The Political Economy of the Coffee Commodity Chain (#)
„In this rigorous analysis of the global trade in coffee, Talbot identifies structural forces limiting the effectiveness and scope of social justice movements on the market such as organic and fair trade certification programs. While the first few chapters will bore the non-economist, the last two detail specific and realistic trade policy objectives that would more effectively safeguard the livelihoods of small growers and the environment - these chapters will appeal to anyone with an activist streak who has ever seriously considered whether or not purchasing fair trade, shade grown or organic coffee is worthwhile. The preceding commodity chain analysis is dry but lucid, explaining the organization and history of coffee markets and detailing how the consumer price of coffee is divided among profits for transnational corporations, export and processing costs and the growers' costs of production. The most important contribution this book makes is to show in hard numbers that historically, international trade regulations (production quotas, in particular) have had a significant positive impact on the livelihoods of small producers worldwide.“

„"Commodification" refers most explicitly to the activities of turning things into commodities and of commercializing that which is not commercial in essence. The mass marketing of pets, the rise of the coffin industry, the conversion of preacher into salesmen, and the globalization of Taleggio cheese are some of the exciting but surprising topics in this volume that show how friendship, death, spirituality, and artisanship all have a price after being commodified.“

„This book is pretty narrow in focus and limits itself to discussions on the history of coffee growing and the business end of the industry. Topics covered include trading, marketing and distribution, consumption patterns, the emergence of cafe's and big coffeehouses, and the social, environmental, and political issues in both the producing and consuming nations. As with so many recently published books this one suffers from a pop-culture sounding title which is deliberately eye-catching, but misleading with its grandiose claim. These titles work best with popular science books about arcane subjects that changed the world set in stories about eccentric heroes and villains.“

„I guess I always felt compelled to stick to the rigidity of a receipe. What I discovered is that I was more or less forced to I play with the amounts and I did not feel that I was somehow making a mistake when doing so. It was okay to toy with this ingredient or that. This gave me confidence to explore variations.“

This report overcomes these issues and gives full financial benchmarks vis--vis worldwide competitors who are present in the same narrow industrial classification. Benchmarks cover assets, liabilities, income and ratios. Since our reports are printed on demand, the figures available are for the latest quarter and are the most up to date available (4 reports are produced each year).“
