Amazon.com: Books: Desiring Paradise... a true story of succumbing to the dream (#)
„As much as I enjoyed reading it, I was put off by the fact that this couple -- and in particular the wife, who narrates the story -- had yuppie written all over them. They struck me as people who couldn't bear to live a day without their cappuccino machine and laptop computers, raising serious doubts in my mind as to their ability to successfully adapt to the vicissitudes of island life. Also, they seemed to have money to burn, as evidenced by their too-frequent jaunts to St. Croix and other destinations, making me feel that on occasion they were losing their focus on their goal of relocating to St.“

„Shady Glade is the peak of Peet's storytelling and artistry. It's a great story about a group of forest creatures who's home is about to be destroyed by the progress of man. They leave their home, ironically, on the very instrument that brought man so quickly across the continent, a train, in search of a new shady glade.“

„In the former category, there is Ed McBain with "Activity on the Flood Plain" which, on the surface, doesn't appear to belong in this collection at all. What begins as a story of a beleaguered artist dealing with a nattering nabob on a planning and zoning board takes a left turn near the conclusion. And, yeah, it definitely belongs in this volume. Jeffrey Deaver is included as well, with "Beautiful." This marks the first time I have ever been able to guess the conclusion of a Deaver work and it did not diminish my enjoyment of the story, which concerns a woman who finds an effective, if drastic way, of dealing with a stalker.“

„An outstanding debut story collection, Z.Z. Packer's Drinking Coffee Elsewhere has attracted as much book-world buzz as a triple espresso. Yet, surprisingly, there are no gimmicks in these eight stories. Their combination of tenderness, humor, and apt, unexpected detail set them apart.“

„The stories he provides are the highlight for me: the apprentice spook with the chicken boning machine, his incidents with learning the English language (e.g. the story of the word in French for shower when asked why his head was wet), the presentation of "sanitary napkins", his TV pilot shot with ingredients from the trash, etc. These all provide for just an absolutely magnficent read.“

„The left's history has been written by Hayden, Flacks, Gitlin and other activists from that era. As Klatch observes, however, "the untold story of the 1960s is about the New Right," a story that is now slowly seeping out in the works of John Andrew "The Other Side of the Sixties" and Mary Brennan "Turning Right in the Sixties." Although a true comparison of SDS and YAF activists, Klatch's most valuable contribution is that her work adds depth to an understanding of those individuals who were the "cadres for conservatism" in the sixties. But the limited size of her sample and the resultant scope of her work only provides a clue to the varied backgrounds and future developments of literally thousands of YAF alumni.“
