„Sections on musical roots, the 1940s and 1950s ("The golden age of Cuban music"), the 1970s to today, and more describe the development of distinct genres like the rumba, conga, and pachanga in Cuba, as well as in expatriate communities in the United States and Puerto Rico. Other recent excellent books on Cuban music include Sue Steward's Musica!: The Rhythm of Latin America; Salsa, Rumba, Merengue, and More, which is more of a coffee-table book (but with a good discography) and doesn't quite match Cuban Fire's scholarly, sequential style. Scott Yanow's Afro-Cuban Jazz is reasonably scholarly, but the scope is not as broad. Cuban Fire occupies the middle ground between those two otherwise terrific books and is the one to choose if you can't afford all three.“

„"It's good to get a reaction because it gets people thinking," she says. "Since we can't import Cuban coffee directly, we're using it as an awareness tool to educate customers about the embargo on Cuba, and get them questioning why can't we have Cuban coffee in the U.S."“

„Yet throughout the latter half of the 19th century, the Cuban coffee sector went through some dramatic ups and downs, and by 1877, only 192 coffee plantations were in production, down from 2,067 only 50 years earlier. This was partly due to disruptions caused by Cubas battle for independence against the Spanish colonizers. Yet by 1895, production was once again up, and in that year, 153,800 quintales were exported.“

„The difference is that, on the island, coffee producers have not been harmed. Cuba is known for the quality of its coffee and the island is looking to improve prices by promoting organic options, an experience that has been successful in diverse mountain areas. The crisis and its true causes While the situation of small farmers becomes ever more desperate, multinational coffee corporations become increasingly prosperous. Starbucks tripled its profits between 1997 and 2000, while Nestl made 26% profits on instant coffee alone.“

„Stories about trips to Cuba and to Nicaragua prove that Wicks is no sunshine hippie, but rather a deeply committed entrepreneur. (The Cafe serves coffee from organically grown beans imported by a company started by a fellow traveler she invited on one of those Nicaraguan trips, and it has ongoing relationships with a number of "sister" restaurants around the world.)“
