Amazon.com: Editorial Reviews: The Moor's Last Sigh

„But the fact remains that, in Aurora's words, 'it was pepper first and onemost-yes, yes, onemost, because why say foremost? Why come forth if you can come first?' What was true of history in general was true of our family's fortunes in particular-pepper, the coveted Black Gold of Malabar, was the original stock-in-trade of my filthy-rich folks, the wealthiest spice, nut, bean and leaf merchants in Cochin, who without any evidence save centuries of tradition claimed wrong-side-of-the-blanket descent from great Vasco da Gama himself .“

„In fact, one must plow through 70+ pages before even getting to the first time you are told to build an executable of what you have been working on. This really goes counter to the Cocoa paradigm of ease of application construction- I much prefer a more experimental approach in which small incremental changes are made to the application, so that the effect of new features can be appreciated right away. Here, by the time you rebuild the application, a lot of time has passed since you coded the features, so the connection between the code and the app feature is not so immediate or clear. Also, if there are bugs from your typing, it is hard to fix your app as it has been a long time since a previous build, so for someone new to Cocoa, it can be hard to know where to look for the errors.“

„I also had the opportunity to visit the factory in Italy and to see the care take over quality in the whole process os transforming coffee into expresso. Their knowledge not only of espresso, but also of all culinary and gastronomic arts, is an excellant indication of the quality of this book.“

„So, in deciding which environment to work in to upgrade my old scientific apps, I felt stuck between two impossible choices. I wanted the power of quartz and the familiarity of C in a format I could learn. This book provides the indispensible introduction to object orientation that is a prerequisite for Cocoa and ultimately Apple's latest and greatest stuff under the hood. From there, the developer documentation and Garfinkel's or Hillegrass' books can take you the rest of the way.“
