Alpenrost Drum Coffee Roaster by Swissmar With 8# Green Coffee! Alpenroast

„Devil's Advocate: the above point about simple one-touch automation, ease of use, etc, may lead you to think the Alpenrost is for the busy person who wants to hit a button and get great coffee. Actually, I think the Alpenrost is a roaster for someone who wants to fiddle with the process more, because you may find yourself adding a aluminum laundry vent for smoke, maybe wanting a thermometer since you can't watch the coffee roasting, and maybe fiddling with the air flow through the roaster (by blocking some of the input vents in the roasted bean bin to raise the roast chamber temp. and roast darker). As with any roaster you must never leave it unattended while it is operating!!!“http://www.sweetmarias.com/ prod.swissmar-alpenrost2.shtml - Cached

„from Down East Coffee company (1-888-224-2233), mentioned above in the Jacmel story, also recently sold me 5lbs of coffee from Cuba. I've roasted up 454grams so far (two batches in the Alpenrost), and the short and sweet is, it has a very unique taste, but is a bit soft, mainly because they simply don't have the altitude in Cuba like they do in Haiti, Jamaica, etc etc. The Extra Turquino is probably the island's second best bean - there is a Crystale bean that is supposed to be WHAM! But it's priced higher than most Hawaiians, and is very hard to come by.“http://www.coffeekid.com/cafetalk/12-02-2001 - Cached
CoffeeGeek - Swissmar Alpenrost First Look

„The Swissmar (website ) Alpenrost is a product that many home roasters and almost as many small professional roasters anticipated. Before it came to market, there was no viable half pound roaster available to the public for a price below $1,000, and the ones hovering around that price point were more often than not based on air roasting technology. The Alpenrost is a drum roaster, using electrical heating coils to do its job, and that made it highly desirable.“http://www.coffeegeek.com/proreviews/firstlook/ alpenrost - Cached

„I am presently just a home roaster and have an Alpenrost for my roasting. I would like to eventually open a cafe' and need information about roasters of larger capacity that will give me the rast that I presently achieve with the Alpenrost. I have tried a couple of other home roasters and was very dissatisfied with the results. Could someome please guide me into a commercial roaster that I will be able to achieve the quality that i now am getting?“http://www.coffeeforums.com/ viewtopic.php?p=6689 - Cached

„The HotTop works almost exactly like a full-sized professional drum-style roasting machines and costs about $600. The Swissmar Alpenrost costs less (around $300) than the HotTop, roasts slightly less coffee, and, does not allow the user to observe the color of the beans as they roast. The Alpenrost produces a somewhat heavier bodied, less lively tasting coffee than the HotTop.“http://www.coffeereview.com/ reference.cfm?id=146 - Cached

„To the right you see part of it. That's my Alpenrost Rotary Drum roaster (aka an Alp), the day I unpacked it. It is the home roaster I use the most, mainly because of the large volume it handles but also because I prefer the resulting bean quality. My other two purpose-build roasters - a Hearthware Precision, and a FreshRoast also get use, but mainly in an additive role, as in if I want to add 50 grams of robusta to a blend.“http://www.coffeekid.com/other/homeroast/ currentstuff - Cached

„Long Wearing out of this current crop of machines, the Alpenrost (supplied by Swissmar ) is easily the longest wearing machine of the bunch. I've put about 180lbs (370 roasting sessions) of coffee through this thing, and while it isn't performing at top ability today, it's holding up well. Two things that went on the unit - the display panel's LED counter has one of the bars not working, so 8 looks like a 9, etc.“http://www.coffeekid.com/cafetalk/07-15-2003 - Cached
SwissMar Alpenrost Roasting Tip Sheet from Sweet Maria's

„Nonetheless, I would suggest roasting your first batch at 8, but this may be too light for most people. The Alpenrost results do vary based on the input voltage and ambient temperature, so an 8 on my unit at the shop can be different from yours. But in general this should produce a lighter City roast. Also, never lift the hood of the roaster during the roast cycle .“http://www.sweetmarias.com/ alpenrost.tipsheet.html - Cached

„One of these three roasters is still around: the Alpenrost, or the "Alp" as most people refer to it. It has its problems - an anemic cooling cycle, the inability to view your roast as it progresses, and unpredictable levels of roasts at times, but by and large, it's a great roaster, albeit pricey at $300 or so average price.“http://www.coffeekid.com/other/homeroast/ homeroastprimer - Cached
Roasting Less Than 8 oz. In the Alpenrost: Home Coffee Roasting: Sweet
(#)
„Experienced roaster/operators can use the Alpenrost to test smaller samples of green beans by doing a "manual roast." This technique will allow the roaster to roast in smaller quantities (IE: 125gr. /4oz.) rather than the “recommended 225gr. /8oz.“http://www.sweetmarias.com/ alpenrost.small-batch-info.html - Cached
